Ford Bristol Qualifying Quotes

ROBERT PRESSLEY --77-- Jasper Engines Taurus (Qualified 18th) -- "I wish we were faster than that. We'd been about a .38, but we were hoping to run about a .28. I think the race track is a little slicker now than it's been, so we'll just hold...

ROBERT PRESSLEY --77-- Jasper Engines Taurus (Qualified 18th) -- "I wish we were faster than that. We'd been about a .38, but we were hoping to run about a .28. I think the race track is a little slicker now than it's been, so we'll just hold off and wait. We were just right on the verge of being too free. With a new tire, nobody really knew what to expect here. We'll just go and see what happens."

JEREMY MAYFIELD --12-- Mobil 1 Taurus (Qualified 17th) -- "We're happy with that. We wish it was a little quicker, it's gonna be right on the edge, but it handled good, ran good, that's all we've got. We did the best we could with what we had. It's a good car, good motor and that's all we've got."

JEFF BURTON --99-- Exide Batteries Taurus (Qualified 15th) -- "We were not as good as we needed to be. It was a decent lap for us, a little bit slower than what we had run in practice, but I think the track changed a little bit and got ahead of us some. I just hope that gets us on the front straightaway. We were way loose...really bad off of two. I never had to get out of the gas, but I wanted to get out of the gas. I hope that's good enough to get on the front straightaway, I don't know if it will be or not."

DARRELL WALTRIP --66-- Route 66/Big Kmart Taurus (Qualified 13th) -- "This is a good team. I know it don't look like it, but this is a good team. Man, I wanted it. I had it. I just went in a little too hard (into turn one) and pushed up just for a second and it cost me a good tenth or so out of the throttle right there...driver error. I was just excited, pumped up, wanting to do good. I ain't doing worth a flip, gotta do better. Everything's on the line, my whole life, my whole career, sponsorship, you name it everything is on the line. I've gotta do better and I was trying too hard. I'll do better next time."

DID YOU GUYS FEEL MORE PRESSURE TODAY? "I feel pressure every week. Yeah, we feel the pressure. We know we can do better. We just haven't been able to get it all put together. Larry Carter, my crew chief and I, we never worked before. I didn't even know the boy when we started the season and it just takes a little bit of time for an old guy and a new guy to come to terms of what it is I need, what it is I want, what it is I'm saying. 'Well, I didn't know what you meant.' I guess you call that communication and we're getting there."

ELLIOTT SADLER --21-- Citgo Taurus(Qualified 9th) -- "That should get us on the frontstretch, that was our main objective -- to get here and maybe start in the top 15 and get on the frontstretch. It's gonna be a bad race car come Sunday. We had a great race car Sunday at Darlington, ran really well, and got some momentum on our side. We're gonna have a bad one here Sunday also."

THIS IS THE OLDEST CAR YOU HAVE. NEIL BONNETT, DALE JARRETT AND MORGAN SHEPHERD HAVE ALL DRIVEN THIS THING. "Everybody's been in this thing and I really like it. We ran it here in the fall last year and had one of the fastest cars here, we just started too far back and got in a wreck. So I said, 'We're gonna qualify a little better this time,' and we did. We'll be good." HOW WAS YOUR LAP? "I was happy with it. It pushed up a little bit more than I thought it would. It was a little tight, but it was good."

STACY COMPTON --9-- Kodiak Taurus (Qualified 28th) -- "We came and tested with the Kodiak Melling Taurus and ran pretty good. We've come back and the track conditions are night and day different. It looks like the track has gotten a whole lot slicker. Everybody is sure a lot slower than testing. We were decent in practice and made some changes that we felt got us a little bit better. We never made a bonzai run in practice. We felt like we could run a pretty quick time, but I got loose the first lap. The first lap is gonna be the best one, so you had to stay in it which ended up killing my second lap. It's a little disappointing, we've always run awful good here, but I think we'll be good in the race."

BRETT BODINE --11-- Ralphs Supermarkets Taurus (Qualified 24th) -- "It wasn't what we were looking for, but I think that's gonna get us in the race. We had a big problem in the second practice, we tore up a transmission and lost all kinds of practice time and didn't get adjusted to the hotter conditions. I wish I would have had one more practice."

RUSTY WALLACE --2-- Miller Lite Taurus (Qualified 6th) -- "The front end just pushed too much on me, it was just too tight. I couldn't get the thing to turn as good as I wanted to. I noticed that in practice and I really don't know what the cause of it was. I thought we'd do a lot better than that. I'd like to have gotten the pole here, I've had a lot of them...but it started pushing a little bit when we unloaded the car off the trailer and I couldn't get the push out of it. When I went out to qualify it did it again, so that slowed me up."

MATT KENSETH --17-- DeWalt Tools Taurus (Qualified 22nd) -- "That was about what I expected. It was maybe too slow to be on the frontstretch, but it was too loose. We've been fighting tight in the center and loose off and we tried to loosen it up a little bit and I real loose on the gas."

DALE JARRETT --88-- Quality Care Service/Ford Credit Taurus (Qualified 20th) -- "That's the fastest we've run, but it's so close now you've got to be right on top. I don't know what I could have done different, but we've got to pick up somewhere."
