FORD RACING GOODY'S HEADACHE POWDER 500 QUALIFYING August 27, 1999 Bristol Motor Speedway

2 - Rusty Wallace - Miller Lite Taurus: (qualified 2nd) "It was a really good lap. I was really happy with it. It went really, really well, and then when I got off of turn 4 it got a little looser than I wanted it to. The rear tires kind of went up in smoke on me and I came up to the start/finish line a little jukie. I lost a little bit of time. I really don't know how much I lost. I want to congratulate Tony (Stewart). I sincerely mean that. He is a good guy." ARE YOU GOING TO PUT A LOT OF PRESSURE ON TONY? "I'll do the best job I possibly can to win the race. This is a great track for me. I've got a lot of friends around here, and I really like coming here. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get the pole, but not real bad. At least I'm on the front row. If I could have kept the string of poles going, that would have been fun. It is enjoyable doing that. But it didn't happen. At least I'm on the front row, and that's a good place to start. My brother Kenny is starting third, and I'm real proud of him. When I go over to the bus tonight and we all sit down and have a little dinner we'll all be happy and that's good. Instead of me be happy and Kenny upset or vice versa." IF YOU FALL IN LINE BEHIND TONY WILL HE BE EASY TO PUT PRESSURE ON BECAUSE HE IS A ROOKIE? "I don't think so. He's been beating us. I don't think there is such a thing as putting pressure on him. We'll all go out and practice tomorrow, and if everything turns out well we'll go into the race with a lot of confidence. The real deal is gonna happen when they drop and green flag and after the first 15 laps. After the first 15, 20 laps that's when it will show what cars are looking pretty good early in the run." ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT FUMES AND CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE CAR HERE? "I think you've got to think about that. It can tire you pretty quick. I've been overheated at this place many times. It's a real fatiguing racetrack. You've just got to have your air conditioner working right, the vents and the stuff in the car working right. But I have never had any problems with carbon monoxide, but I've had problems with heat, but I think everybody has." YOU'VE BEEN SITTING ON WIN 49 SINCE YOUR LAST TIME HERE. HAS IT BEEN FRUSTRATING TRYING TO GET TO 50? "It has been frustrating to get to 50. But we'll get there. I just don't know how soon it's going to be. I wish it would hurry up because I've got a lot of gifts gonna happen if I get to 50. I'm still waiting on a motorcycle. Fifty will be a great number. I think NASCAR or Miller has some things planned. It will be a cool deal when it happens." WHY IS BRISTOL A FAVORITE TRACK? "I really can't answer the question except to say that every driver has got to have a favorite racetrack and Bristol has been my favorite and Richmond, Virginia. They are right there on an even scale. I love them both. And I grew up on the short tracks and cut my teeth on the short tracks and they just kind of come natural to me. At Bristol and Richmond I know the feel that I'm looking for. Sometimes I can't get to it, but at least I know what I'm trying to achieve. I think my driving style has been a little bit different than most here at Bristol, and that has been an advantage to me."

6 - Mark Martin - Valvoline/Cummins Taurus: (qualified 7th) YOU ONLY TOOK ONE LAP AND IT IS A BRAND NEW CAR. "We've only run one lap all day. There wasn't any use running a second lap. It is a new car and it's working well. We've been right at the charts all day. I probably didn't hit as good of a lap with it as I did in practice. We slowed down a little bit. It was just a different set of tires and a different time."

66 - Darrell Waltrip - Big Kmart/Route 66 Taurus: (qualified 18th) "This is the same car we had here in the spring and qualified 12th. And this time we're going to qualify good. We're going to race good tomorrow night. We've got a good car and everybody, Phillipe and everybody has done a good job getting it ready. There's a lot of pressure on an old guy like me when you miss the race last week and you've got to make it tonight. I feel real good about it. I believe we'll make it in with that."

88 - Dale Jarrett - Quality Care Service/Ford Credit Taurus: (qualified 25th) "Terrible. It wouldn't stick to anything. I don't know why it didn't. It just wasn't good. I don't know if it was the set of tires or what. We didn't do anything from the last practice. It just wouldn't stick." IS THIS JUST KIND OF AN UNKNOWN FOR YOU GUYS? "You've just got to race it. It's just another race track. You know how Bristol is. The biggest thing you can do is get your car good, and after that if anything happens you just have to take care of it." YOU'VE WON HERE BEFORE IN THE NIGHT RACE. "Yeah, we run well here, but a lot of guys do that. I mean you've got to think we've got a chance to win here."

94 - Bill Elliott - McDonald's Taurus: (qualified 23rd) "It was decent. I feel pretty good about the lap. I just hated going out that soon. I think that's a little bit of a negative. Right now we're just ready to race. Wherever we end up, we end up. I think we'll have a good race car come tomorrow night."

99 - Jeff Burton - Exide Batteries Taurus: (qualified 43rd) "We've been bad all day. Nothing is really surprising about our qualifying run. We just can't get it to do what we need it to do. I hope it is a better race car that it was in qualifying."
