TOYOTA NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Test
February 1, 2008
ANDY GRAVES, Vice President Chassis Engineering, TRD, U.S.A. (Toyota Racing Development)
How has pre-season testing been? "We have been pleased with the outcome of preseason testing at Daytona, Las Vegas and now here at California. The speeds that were seen in Daytona have also been seen on the intermediate tracks, which is a solid result of the work we have done preparing for this season. Our teams and engineers have gathered a large amount of data and we know there are areas that we will be able to improve upon before we return to California and Vegas. We look forward to heading to Daytona in a week and getting the season started."
MICHAEL WALTRIP, No. 55 NAPA Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing
How was West Coast pre-season testing? "We have a lot to do. We can't get our cars to turn at all -- the front-ends don't work right. We came out here with some different geometry packages on each car and it seems like one of them works better than other two. So, we'll go home and study all that. That's the beauty of the team that we have -- we have a lot of smart people that can sort through it and when we come back we'll be ready. I feel pretty good about our speed we just need to be a little bit better on the feel side of it."
DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 00 Aaron's Dream Machine Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing
How was West Coast pre-season testing? "We started off not very good at all, but kind of progressed and made some good changes and adjustments. I'm very happy with the way our Camry rides in race trim. We made one qualifying run out of the two days that we've been here and that was yesterday. We didn't do any qualifying runs today because we wanted to do some long runs and see where we stacked up race-wise. I'm pretty excited about it, really. I haven't been able to say that much, I certainly didn't say it much last year but this year just has a different feel. I actually have something I can look forward to driving and I'm excited about that. Whether it was Vegas or here -- testing has been pretty productive."
How has it been working with your new crew chief Ryan Pemberton? "Frank Kerr did an awesome job last year, but everything is different now. Shop personnel are different, the cars are different -- everything is a different situation. I think Ryan is a big part of that. We get along good and he does a very good job. He's been in this game a long time and I think he can bring a lot to our team. We're pretty optimistic about how things will be this year -- I think it will be a lot different than it was last year. It already is."
How's the West Coast pre-season testing going? "It's going well. We didn't start out nearly as good as we wanted to here. We felt like we were probably stronger and better in Vegas. We've made a lot of gains here. One car in particular we are pretty happy with in race trim. We weren't very happy with the other car yesterday, but today we've made some gains with it."
