Fontana, California -- After starting in row 18 of the Auto Club 500, Mike Garvey finished 38th successfully completing the first race of the season for the #51 Marathon Chevy. "I am pleased with the progress of our team today," said car owner Joe Auer of Competitive Edge Motorsports. "Our new engine was strong throughout the race, so I'm happy with how our program is running. Our pit crew also performed well and we didn't lose any time in the pits. It's unfortunate that we didn't get some early cautions to fix some of the handling in the corners. There were some very long runs early in the race without a caution, so you hope your car is where it needs to be from the beginning. Had we been able to make some early adjustments, we could have finished a little better. It's all part of the growth process."
Going into their first race of the 2006 season, the Fontana's 500 miles provided a good test for the Marathon team. "With new bodies, equipment and new team members, you really don't know what to expect, and this day went much better than I expected," commented Garvey after the race. "I had a few nerves coming in, but this was a solid start and a good place to build from." The team came together well and got the first race in the books. The Marathon #51 plans to run 20 races this year, doubling their competition from last year and prepping for a full season next year.
The Marathon Chevy team's next race is at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 19 for the Golden Corral 500. The Atlanta Motor Speedway is one of the fastest tracks on the circuit.
