Fontana II: Ford teams qualifying quotes

ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (Qualified 17th) "I had a little tighter set of tires on and it showed. We were just way too tight. The track is in really good shape, but we just missed it real bad. We know it's gonna race good. That...

ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (Qualified 17th)

"I had a little tighter set of tires on and it showed. We were just way too tight. The track is in really good shape, but we just missed it real bad. We know it's gonna race good. That will be 12th or 13th, but we'll be alright. We can see 'em and we'll try to get 'em from there."

MARK MARTIN - No. 6 Viagra Taurus (Qualified 11th)

"It was a great lap and great judgement by the Viagra team in the garage. All of that was done in the garage. These guys are fantastic." YOU HAVE A SHOT AT THE TOP 10. DOES THAT CHANGE ANYTHING YOU OR THE TEAM DOES THE NEXT 2 RACES? "No, there's nothing else we can do. We're just doing everything we can. We've broken a lot of parts and spent a lot of Sundays in the garage, but we've got a championship team here. Whether or not we get a chance to run for it is yet to be seen, but I'm just privileged to be in the seat." IS IT A CASE OF UNLOADING GOOD? "We unloaded terrible and I was just at my wits end. It was a case of team effort, not only by Pat (Tryson) and Wally (Brown), but by everybody. They all put their heads together and all of that was done in the garage."

MATT KENSETH - No. 17 DEWALT Tools Taurus (Qualified 30th)

"It wasn't too great. I kind of messed both laps up. It got so windy out there that I kind of underestimated the wind and got into one too hot on both laps. That kind of messed both of them up, so it's a little better than we were running in practice. We didn't run very good in practice and even though we picked up a little bit, that's still not gonna put us in too great of a spot." YOU'VE COME FROM THE BACK BEFORE? "Yeah, the good thing is it's a great race track and you can run side-by-side. If you've got a faster car, it's no problem to pass. We've just got to get our car to run good in race trim."

KURT BUSCH - No. 97 Sharpie/IRWIN Taurus (Qualified 4th)

"It was just a weird car today, but we finally put it all together. We were chasing ourselves with one question versus another question and we scienced it all out right before we went and qualified. We just put what we thought we needed to have under it. I didn't know it would stick that good, so to be up front is good and that way it will give us better track position throughout the race and that will make our decisions easier when it comes time to pitting and taking two versus four on Sunday." THERE'S A LOT OF FOCUS ON YOU HERE. "This is a great track. I enjoy running here. I've had experience with Winston West back then and trucks here, and then of course with the Cup car we've won a race here. It's just a matter of adjusting to the changing track conditions. This is the first time we've been here in September and I know the asphalt out west gets very hot in the summer time." WHAT ABOUT THE CHASE? "We're sixth and it would take disaster to knock us out in these next two races, so we still need to make sure we put two solid runs together."

RICKY RUDD - No. 21 Keep it Genuine/Motorcraft Taurus (Qualified 20th)

"I'm tickled to death with Fatback and all these guys on this Motorcraft team. The driver screwed up. The car felt so good. I haven't had a car that stuck like this in so long. When I drove into turn one I said, 'This feels pretty good,' and I kept on going and kept on going and, stupid me, I overdrove the corner the down there and paid the price. I probably lost two-tenths down in turn one, but I'm tickled to death. We haven't run this good or had a car feel this good in a long, long time on these race tracks." HOW IS THE CHEMISTRY WITH FATBACK? "It's just like riding a bike or swimming. The communication has picked right up where we sort of left off a few years ago. It's gonna take a little while. Fatback likes to massage the cars a little differently, so it's gonna take two or three more weekends before we get one of his cars in the system, but I can't say enough. I needed a shot of confidence and now I've got something underneath of me that sticks to the race track. Race trim is another issue, but from what I'm seeing it should race well."

DALE JARRETT - No. 88 UPS Taurus (Qualified 25th)

"Mike wanted to free the car up some and I really wouldn't do it because of past experience with this race car. Everytime we tried to free it up a little bit we've gotten really loose in qualifying. Even though the track temperature cooled off, I just wouldn't do it so I was tight in one and two. I needed to be just a little bit freer to run a little bit faster."

CARL EDWARDS - No. 99 Shop Rat Taurus (Qualified 19th)

"It was good. It was just so tight on the first lap that I drove it a lot differently the second lap and it paid off to be able to run that second lap. The guys did a good job getting it set up to where we could do that. Bob (Osborne) made the call right before we went out. He said, 'We ought to loosen it up just a little bit,' and we did but not enough. It was still too tight. It's pretty frustrating because that's a really good car right there. If we had it balanced a little better, it would be very, very fast." YOU SPOKE TO MARK AFTER HIS LAP. WHAT DID HE TELL YOU? "He told me there was a lot of grip on the bottom. I'm glad I talked to him because it really helped me on that second lap. That really paid off a lot and it was really nice of him to help me."

GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 National Guard/Subway Taurus (Qualified 7th)

"We've got to be happy with that. Our car wasn't that good earlier. This is the car we won with at Michigan and we thought we were gonna be a lot better than that, but the guys worked real hard on it and got the National Guard car a lot better. We're pretty excited to qualify in the top 10. We've got a car we think we can with here and we're just gonna have to see what we've got in happy hour." THE WIND CAUSED SOME TROUBLE OUT THERE? "Yeah. The wind is always a factor qualifying here. It always has been and always will be, but the biggest thing is it changed directions today. I was pretty cautious getting into turn one and probably left a tenth of speed on the table, which is probably five spots, but that's about all I could do."
