"It's faster than what we went in practice, but I'm real skeptical about if it's gonna be good enough or not. I'd like to hope it is, but I don't know. We had a really good Post-it Ford Fusion in practice and these guys have been working on it. Me and Frankie (Stoddard) have just been learning together. Our car has been getting better and better even though we haven't quite had the chance to show it yet, but this is probably the best Cup car we've had at the track so far. For whatever reason, this set of tires is really, really tight - extremely tight compared to what we practiced at - so I did the best I could to try and pull out a second lap that would be respectable and try to put us in the show, but I just don't know if it's gonna do it."
MOST GUYS DON'T LIKE BEING THE FIRST CAR OUT THERE EITHER. HOW MUCH DIFFERENT WAS THE TRACK? "I had the benefit of being out in the Busch car, so I kind of knew what the track was like, but being the first car out for qualifying, the track is a little greasy. It's always easier to go last for whatever reason, whether it's mental or not. I'd like to hope that's good enough, but I don't know."
MARK MARTIN - No. 6 AAA Ford Fusion (Qualified 38th)
"I just messed up my lap out there. These guys all ran faster, so I tried to run too fast, but we're alright."
GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 National Guard Ford Fusion (Qualified 21st)
"We wanted to really make more than one qualifying run in practice, but we got a little behind and didn't get it. But for the cards we were dealt, I think that was a pretty dang good lap for us."
JAMIE MCMURRAY - No. 26 Smirnoff Ice Ford Fusion (Qualified 31st)
"We just needed one more run, I think. It drove pretty good, but I just overdrove it on my lap in practice and then I took it so easy there that I probably didn't get everything out of it. The good thing is that the car is really good in race trim, so I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. We started like 30th here in the spring and got up to the top five before the first caution, so it's a race track you can pass on."
CARL EDWARDS - No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion (Qualified 24th)
"Qualifying is not huge here, but we still wanted to qualify a little bit better than that, but we were just too tight. We tried some stuff and didn't work, but that's just the way it goes."
MATT KENSETH - No. 17 DeWalt Ford Fusion (Qualified 11th)
"For some reason lately we've been able to pick up in qualifying a little bit, so part of that is Doug and everybody building such great motors. That's helped a lot, but we've been able to pick it up a little bit lately and that's good. We made the right adjustments because I knew I didn't get it all in practice, so I felt alright about it."
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE YOU START HERE DOES IT? "We started 31st in the spring or something like that, so it's a much better spot than we had then. It's nice to get a decent spot and a halfway decent pit road pick and try to be up out of some of the traffic in the beginning."
DAVID GILLILAND - No. 38 M&M's Ford Fusion (Qualified 20th)
"Last week we started 38th, so this week already it looks like we'll be about 18 cars in front of where we started last week. That's big to start with because if you start off behind, it's just so hard to catch up. We're real excited. The car is pretty good in qualifying trim and we're real excited about tomorrow to work on our race package. I think we'll be better in race package. We kept it on the conservative side, the little bit tight side for qualifying because of how loose we were in Michigan, so it's just gonna take a little bit of time for me to figure out exactly what we need in practice for it to be good in qualifying. Todd and I have been working real good together. We've been on one side and now we were on the other side, so I think it's gonna be easy to get back in the middle. We're learning and we're coming along good."
