Elliott Sadler Aiming for Career Best Finish at California Speedway
Elliott Sadler and the M&M'S team head out west for the second race of the 2004 season at the two-mile California Speedway. With just two races left in the Chase for the Championship cutoff and fresh off of a fifth-place finish in the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, Sadler and the team are seventh in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series point standings. Sadler is 127 points ahead of 11th-place Kasey Kahne and has scored six top-five and 10 top-10 finishes in 2004. He was ranked 20th in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series point standings at this point in the season one year ago. Sadler has competed in six races at California Speedway and his best finish is 21st. He finished 22nd there earlier this season.
QUOTING M&M'S DRIVER ELLIOTT SADLER: "This is definitely a big race for this M&M'S team. We're taking what I believe is our best car in the shop. It's the same car we ran at the Brickyard and I'm real excited about our chances this weekend. We made up a lot of ground in the Chase for the Championship last week at Bristol with a fifth-place run. I know I didn't win that race but I sure felt like I did. Our goal for this weekend is to maintain our position in the standings and put ourselves in a good position for a solid finish. On the other hand, I'm a racer so my main goal is to win. With just two races left until the playoffs I know I will also be a little more conscious on restarts and try not to put myself in a bad situation. We had a tire blow at Michigan and that cost us a lot of points. That's just part of racing. You can do everything perfect on some days and still not have the good outcome you expect. I'm just so proud to be driving for Robert Yates Racing and piloting the M&M'S Ford. We have a great race team and it's really cool to be in the position we're in.
QUOTING M&M'S CREW CHIEF TODD PARROTT: " We are going to take the car we started and finished third with at Indianapolis. I am so proud of this M&M'S team's performance at Bristol last weekend. That win at Texas seems like years ago so I think we are ready to get back to Victory Lane."
QUOTING M&M'S SPOTTER BRETT GRIFFIN: "When it comes to the spotter, the track at California is very similar to Michigan Speedway. It's a huge race track and the distance between the car on the backstretch and the spotter stand is pretty far so the first thing that is important is being able to find the car. The M&M'S car has a lot of different colors on it so we run a bright number on the roof to help me pick it out of a pack easily. I also use binoculars as a backup. I'm constantly watching our car but also watching in front of Elliott in case there's potential for a wreck ahead. Hopefully we can stay out of trouble this weekend and have a shot at a win at the end."
