Fontana II: Dodge drivers qualifying quotes

KASEY KAHNE (No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge Charger) -- Seventh "I don't know how it went that fast. It was just up off the bottom, and it just kind of rolled up on the right-front, and it didn't feel that good. But, that was still a good time. I think these Evernham Engines run good. To be in a good starting spot, it's cool. Mark Martin's first so far, and he put down a good lap."

"We made a bunch of changes before qualifying there, and we kind of went back to where we were yesterday. We didn't make the qualifying run in practice today, and we ended up 39th in the first practice because we didn't have time to. This is different than what we've had all weekend, and it qualified good."

"We hadn't made any qualifying runs all day yesterday or today. It was the first time we taped off, so we should pick up at least a second at this track with tape. It's a track that you should at least (pick up) seven or eight-tenths. That's just the way it is. We picked up more than that. I feel like we've qualified good. We'll just see how the race goes because it's going to be completely different in the race tomorrow."

"California is just a fast track. You try to run a lot of throttle and a little bit of brake and make a quick lap. It works well in qualifying, but to race like that, it's different. We had a great race here last year, running second to Sadler. Hopefully, we can have a better performance this year than what we did in the spring race here."

STERLING MARLIN (No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Charger) -- 12th "I thought it was a pretty good lap for us. We never made a qualifying run, we just worked on race trim. The guys have done a good job on it. The car has driven really good since it's been here. We changed a few things for qualifying and it worked out good."

"We just tried to get it driving. It drove good right off the truck yesterday. We're just tickling it. I mean, you'll be a little loose, a little tight. In the past two days it's been pretty violent."

JEREMY MAYFILED (No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge Charger) -- 13th "We're really happy with it. We had a good car. We were really good in race trim. We didn't do any qualifying runs whatsoever. So, I'm just really proud of these guys right here. We didn't know what to expect for qualifying, but that should get us somewhere in the top 15, top 10 or something like that."

"I've got a great race team here. I've got a lot of confidence in them, and they've got a lot of confidence in me. That's what it's all about. That's pretty cool when you can do that. I've never made a qualifying run yet, coming out here and running wide open. So, that's pretty cool."

BILL ELLIOTT (No. 91 McDonald's Dodge Charger) -- 30th "We've been kind of fighting a few different things, and we're just trying to get things sorted out. I'm very proud of the McDonald's guys. They've done a good job. And Ray's put a lot of support behind me. But, it's tough trying to get everything you need in just a few hours of practice. A lot of times you come in and you're off a little bit, and it's hard to work through that. With practice in different conditions on the racetrack, it's hard to kind of get a feel for where the racetrack is going to go. So, we'll be okay."

"Well, the short practice time and the new configurations of the car this year, it seems like we've never gotten a good handle on it like we did last year. And, we've kind of been a little bit behind trying to struggle through every time we come out, and that makes it difficult. Then you turn around and put a limited schedule on top of that and it just makes it difficult to work through a lot of things. But, we had a decent run at Michigan, and that's the strategy that we need to use here. It's a long race, a 500-mile race, and lot of things can happen. That's what we've got to work on."

CASEY MEARS (No. 41 Target Dodge Charger) -- 33rd "We were way, way, way too loose. We were just sideways. I couldn't even drive it at all. We qualified horribly, but it felt decent in race trim. So, we'll just have to wait and see how it turns out for the race."

RUSTY WALLACE (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger) -- 34th "I was very, very loose in qualifying. I made a change. I did a left-rear spring change, and a right-front spring change and it just didn't work out for me. I was thinking about making some changes for the race and it was just the wrong way to go, and that was it."
