CLINT BOWYER, NO. 07 JACK DANIEL'S IMPALA SS, met with members of the media at Auto Club Speedway and discussed racing at Auto Club Speedway; getting in the Chase, the upcoming Richmond race and other subjects.
TALK ABOUT THE RACING HERE AT CALIFORNIA: "Looking forward to getting out there and getting qualified. It is going to be an important day here today. This is an important weekend. We have to try and be on our game here. We need to get out of here with a good finish and I think we can do it."
DO YOU DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT THIS WEEKEND? "No. Obviously it is time to pull out anything you can possibly come up with. We have to run good here. This is the type of track we have been struggling with this year. We know going in to Richmond, we should be ok there. But it sure would be nice to gain a little bit of leeway coming out of California heading to Richmond. Just looking forward to Monday morning and see what we have got."
DO YOU THINK WE NEED RIVALRIES IN NASCAR? "I think they are important. Everybody seems like they want to follow that and want to build off of that, especially you guys (the media). I don't think we probably make as much out of it as you guys do sometimes."
IS THERE A GUY OUT ON THAT TRACK THAT YOU HAVE JUST GOT TO BEAT? "Yes, there are 42 of them every week."
ARE YOU UPSET ABOUT BEING ON THE CHASE BUBBLE? "Not really. We haven't done as good of a job as we have in the past. The last couple of months have not been as expected or obviously as planned up to our capabilities. We certainly not happy with where we are at, I'm not. But, you have to make the best of it, we have to pull together here and make this happen. This Chase is what it is all about; you can't win a championship without being in this thing. As far as I am concerned, I want to run for two championships this year."
ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT THE CREW SITUATION WITH THE TWO CARS NEXT YEAR, YOU AND CASEY MEARS? "Nope. Absolutely not. Right now I am worried about getting this car in the Chase. That is what it is all about and that is what I get paid to do. If you don't do that, you aren't doing your job."
WERE YOUR WORDS LAST WEEK REGARDING MICHAEL WALTRIP JUST THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT? "Yes, it was. Obviously, a lot of what is said on the radio, in my opinion, doesn't need to be broadcasted. But, it is up to us to keep that in mind. That is the first time they have ever broadcasted me, obviously it wasn't a good thing. It is frustrating. It is down to crunchy time. Everybody is trying to dig for every inch; I didn't mean anything by it, just letting off a little steam."
TALK ABOUT THE LAST LAP AT RICHMOND IN THE SPRING WHERE THOSE TWO GUYS (KYLE BUSCH AND DALE EARNHARDT, JR.) AND YOU WENT ON TO WIN. "That was pretty cool. I'm not going to take anything away from our day. That win was surprising, it surprised us and that was what was cool about that win. We deserved it. We came from a long way back; we had a very fast car. I would have liked if the race would have been another hundred laps where once I got up there, I needed to free up a little bit to run with those guys, but I certainly think we could have done that, just never got that chance."
TALK ABOUT RICHMOND. "Richmond is just a perfect race track. It has the speed of the big tracks that the fans want to see, but has the rootin' and gougin' and beatin' and bangin' that a short track has, You can still kinda get away with that stuff. It is an awesome race track that everybody likes going to."
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CHANGES IN THE BUD SHOOTOUT? "It is what it is."
IF YOU WEREN'T RACING, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? "I would be racin' something. Might not be in NASCAR but I would be racin'. Mom and Dad run a towing business. I don't think I would be dragging cars out of the ditch. Always was in the car business, around cars, working in dealerships. I really like car dealerships and the business of selling cars. Just being around cars. I am a car guy. I love all kinds of cars. But really like those Chevrolets."
ANY MORE DISCUSSIONS ON WHERE TO GET OWNERS POINTS FOR THE NO. 33 NEXT YEAR? "No. I am not here to talk about all that stuff. I am trying to concentrate on getting this car in the Chase."
