Irvan to make several appearances throughout the weekend
Watkins Glen, NY (April 4, 2002) - Watkins Glen International President Craig Rust announced today that Ernie Irvan will serve as special guest of the track and Grand Marshal for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series race August 8-11. Irvan, winner of the 1991 Winston Cup and 1992 Busch Series races at The Glen, will commemorate the 10-year anniversary of his consecutive wins by proclaiming, "Drivers, start your engines," to this year's NASCAR Winston Cup field on August 11. A schedule of appearances will be released closer to the event weekend.
"Ernie Irvan has left his mark on the sport of NASCAR and in the record books at Watkins Glen," said Rust. "We are pleased to welcome him back to The Glen, the site of his last NASCAR Winston Cup race, as well as the place where he won two NASCAR races in 1991 and 1992."
Irvan is currently making his return to racing, this time as a team owner. Driver Kevin Conway drives Irvan's ARCA car in selected ARCA RE/MAX Series events. The team is currently operating out of a portion of Irvan's stables that has been converted into a race shop.
"I'm really happy about the opportunity to serve as the Grand Marshal for the Winston Cup race in August at Watkins Glen International," Irvan said. "I won this race back in 1991 and I've always really enjoyed racing at The Glen."
At The Glen, Irvan started in 15 races, and in addition to the 1991 Winston Cup win, won a Busch Grand National Race in 1992 and finished second and third in 1994 and 1992 respectively in the Winston Cup events.
Irvan, who raced for 15 overall Winston Cup victories, retired in 1999 after his second near fatal accident at Michigan International Speedway. His last career Winston Cup start came at Watkins Glen. He has tallied 22 career NASCAR Winston Cup pole positions, 68 Top-5 finishes and 124 Top-10 finishes and over $11 million in career earnings.
The 2002 Winston Cup Series takes over The Glen August 8-11 and features premier drivers such as four-time winner Jeff Gordon with the Winston Cup Series on Sunday. The excitement starts Friday with Bully Hill Vineyards 250 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series and is followed by the "Little Trees" 150 presented by Pepsi NASCAR Busch North Series on Saturday.
