"M&M's"® Racing/Ernie Irvan Daytona International Speedway Notes And Quotes
Ernie Irvan's Daytona International Speedway Highlights...
* "The Feeding Frenzy Has Begun" for the "M&M's"® Racing Team. Earlier this year "M&M's"® debuted its newest brand, Crispy Chocolate Candies, and in Daytona the No. 36 Pontiac will promote the "Feeding Frenzy" sporting a blue paint scheme. Crispy, the orange character in the "M&M's"® cast, is on the rear quarter panel running from the competition. * "M&M's"® Racing Team driver Ernie Irvan has two wins at the world's most famous speedway, with one each in the spring and summer. Irvan captured the Daytona 500 in 1991 and the Pepsi 400 in 1992.
* Irvan's latest outing at the 2.5-mile speedway was a 14th-place effort in the 1999 Daytona 500. Sporting his new "M&M's"® paint scheme, Irvan started from the 31st position, but it took only 37 laps for the "M&M's"® Racing Team to break into the top 10. Irvan kept the "M&M's"® Pontiac in and around the top 10 for most of the 200 laps until a late race skirmish damaged the aerodynamics, relegating the "M&M's"® Pontiac to a 14th-place finish.
* Ernie Irvan has one pole position at Daytona. He captured the top starting spot in the 1992 Pepsi 400. The "M&M's"® driver also boasts 10 top-10 finishes and six top fives.
* Irvan elected to sit out the 1998 Pepsi 400 under the lights at Daytona following a crash at Talladega. Ricky Craven filled in for the No. 36 Pontiac and finished eighth.
Ernie Irvan's thoughts on racing at Daytona... "I didn't run this race last year, but I like running at Daytona and I like it when we run under the lights so I'm looking forward to running the "M&M's"® Pontiac under the lights for the first time at Daytona. We run under the lights a good bit and most of the time when we are out of the track, it looks like it is daylight anyway.
"As far as running restrictor plate races, they aren't a problem for me. Every time I've run at Daytona it has been a restrictor plate race so I don't really have anything to compare it to. I don't think it restricts what I can do as a driver, but I do have to really be aware of who I'm racing with and work out the passes I plan to make about a lap in advance."
