Erik Jones leads second practice as Harvick finds the wall

Jones posted a fast lap of 187.251mph. He was followed by Chase Elliott (186.843mph), Ryan Newman (186.732mph), Jimmie Johnson in his backup car (186.384mph) and Brad Keselowski (186.292mph).

Kurt Busch faced a voltage issue earlier in the morning due to a switch that was set wrong and timed in 31st. Pole-sitter Kyle Larson was back in 22nd.

Towards the end of the session, there were two incidents. First, Harvick found the wall, but the damage did not seem significant enough to go to a backup car.

The story was different for David Ragan, who lost control entering Turn 3 (possibly due to a rear tire failure) and pounded the outside wall with the right side. Chase Elliott was running close behind, but was able to escape from the incident unscathed. The No. 38 will go to a backup car.

“We just cut a left-rear tire going down the back straightaway and I tried to start slowing it down as quick as I could, and just couldn’t slow it down fast enough," explained Ragan. "By the time I got to turn three I was wrecking before I even got to the corner.  It’s certainly unfortunate.  I felt like our Camping World Ford was pretty decent.  We made a few adjustments and hadn’t put new tires on yet, and I felt like our speeds hadn’t fallen off a lot, so it’s unfortunate.  Hopefully, we can get our backup out in time to make a few laps in the second practice.”

Jones also led the way in ten lap consecutive averages, followed by Johnson, Jamie McMurray, Larson and Newman.
