STUART, Va. (Aug. 29, 2000) -- NASCAR Winston Cup driver Elliott Sadler will be racing for a win at the Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend, but he'll also be gunning for an even bigger victory -- the end of neuromuscular diseases. Sadlerís Wood Brothers owned CITGO Ford will carry a special white and blue paint scheme to promote the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon that benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The Telethon is MDA's single most important fund-raising event, and CITGO Petroleum Corporation is MDA's largest national corporate sponsor. CITGO has used a variety of promotions to raise money for MDA. Golf and bowling tournaments, social functions, walk-a-thons, auctions and other types of events have been used in addition to this second paint scheme promotion with Sadler, Wood Brothers Racing and NASCAR.
CITGO's involvement with MDA is a 14-year relationship that CITGO CEO and President David J. Tippeconnic is especially proud of, "Our marketers and employees take much pride in knowing that we've made a difference in the lives of Americans who have neuromuscular diseases. We've raised nearly $40 million during the life of the sponsorship, and we remain committed to this most challenging battle." Tippeconnic is also an MDA national vice president.
Elliott Sadler will wear a special MDA driver's suit and helmet, which along with the hood of the No. 21 car, will be auctioned to benefit MDA following the race.
"I'm excited to be involved with such a great cause, and proud to be driving for a sponsor that's willing to help others," stated Sadler. "I hope our efforts on the track make the day even better for ëJerry's kidsí and I hope NASCAR fans are major contributors towards MDA this year. Darlington is one of my favorite racetracks and this weekend has the potential to be a successful weekend for us. I posted my career best finish in a Winston Cup car last week and we feel like we may finally have some momentum on our side."
Both events will be held Labor Day weekend: the Telethon on Sept. 3 and 4, and the Southern 500 on Sept. 3 at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, S.C. The Southern 500 will be televised on ESPN at 1 p.m. EDT, and broadcast on MRN radio.
Leading up to the weekend, die-cast models of Sadlerís No. 21 car with the MDA paint scheme are being sold at CITGO-branded convenience stores, gas outlets and various NASCAR souvenir retailers. A percentage of the sale of these unique, 1/64 scale collectible cars will benefit MDA.
Headquartered in Tucson, Ariz., MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. MDA fights nine forms of muscular dystrophy, Lou Gehrig's disease, spinal muscular atrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and other disorders affecting muscles and nerves. The Association's programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors.
