DARLINGTON, S.C. (September 4, 2000) - Elliott Sadler and the CITGO Ford started 21st and finished 18th in Sunday's Southern 500. Sadler restarted the race from the 2nd position on lap 225 but the overcast skies withheld the rain. The downpour came later and awarded Bobby Labonte the win.
Quoting Elliott: "We battled a real loose racecar in the beginning and we lost a lot of track position. We caught a break when the rain came. It saved us from loosing a lap and we made some major changes to the car. We tightened the car up and we worked our way back into the top-20 by half way. We made our way up to 2nd after a great call in the pits. I couldn't decide if I wanted the rain to come or stay away. A 2nd place finish would have been great but I wanted a chance to win.
"We restarted the race and stayed up front until some of the guys decided to pit under caution. We stayed out because we knew the rain was close. The guys with fresher tires passed us and we ended up 18th. We definitely should have finished better than that but I'm proud of this team. Our car was not where we needed it to be in the beginning but the adjustments the crew made throughout the race was great. The teams that run up front week in and week out are able to change the car as the race goes on. That's what the guys did today and we got a solid finish out of it."
Elliott Sadler and the CITGO Ford next head to Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Virginia. The race will be televised live nationally by ESPN and broadcast on live radio by the Motor Racing Network. The start of Saturday's race is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
