Coming off of a second place finish at Las Vegas, Jeremy Mayfield feels like he's finally in the right situation.."The chemistry is there, Sammy (Johns, his crew chief) and I get along great, the race team's pumped up, and Ray has been awesome to work for."
Now that he's finally found a comfortable home at Evernham Motorsports, Mayfield is still trying to figure out what went wrong with his partnership with Penske. "I'm not sure. I felt like our whole program started out wrong, we had two separate teams trying to be one race team. Probably between the two of us (himself and former teammate Rusty Wallace,) we're more bullheaded on each other's part and it probably didn't help matters."
"It'll be interesting to see how Ryan & Rusty do, maybe that'll answer some of my questions I had also, maybe it was all me, who knows. I know I'm very happy where I'm at now and I'm very happy to be a part of Evernham Motorsports and be Bill Elliott's teammate and Casey Atwood's teammate."
When the deal was first cut for Mayfield to take over the 19, while Atwood moved to the 7, many wondered if Atwood would end up with the "leftovers" from the 9 and 19 teams. Mayfield believes time will prove that is far from the truth. "They've showed great signs just as we have. This past week they didn't have a very good race but that team is certainly going to be a good team to be reckoned with. He's been as fast as me and Bill, or faster, in all three races so far. Casey's been awesome to work with."
Bill Elliott's sentiments exactly. "I couldn't have asked for a better situation, I've got a great group of guys around me." His opinion of adding the third team? "I think having Jeremy on board and still having Casey as part of the deal, will help us get to where we need to be quicker. That's the key that I see."
