CONCORD, N.C. (October 8, 2001)- Changing track conditions played havoc with the Dodge Dealers Intrepid R/Ts from Evernham Motorsports in Sunday's Winston Cup race at Charlotte. Bill Elliott, who started the day in 18th, managed to steer his No. 9 Dodge Intrepid R/T to a 15th place finish, and Casey Atwood piloted his No. 19 Dodge Intrepid R/T to a 24th place finish after starting in 29th place.
Crew chief Mike Ford and the No. 9 crew worked diligently early on, trying to give Elliott a car he could handle. The Georgia native, who celebrates his birthday on Monday, was able to maneuver his way toward the front of the pack even after falling back as far as 38th. It was Elliott's best finish at the 1.5 mile speedway since October of 1999 when he finished 11th. He remains 14th in points, 208 points out of 10th place.
"It was better than what I expected," said Elliott whose No. 9 Dodge Intrepid R/T was outfitted with a special paint scheme featuring Marvel comic book hero Spider-Man. "We still have a little bit of work to do. This car was a new car and we worked on it, but we could never seem to get the right combination at the right time. So, I guess 15th isn't bad."
With Spider-Man crawling on the hood of his No. 19 Dodge Dealers Intrepid R/T, Atwood tried to gain track position with a car that ran loose all day. The Dew Crew worked throughout the day to get his car manageable. In his second Winston Cup start at Charlotte, Atwood, who began the day in 29th place, finished 24th. The Winston Cup rookie gained a position in the points, moving up to 30th.
"We had a pretty rough day," said Atwood. "I was really excited about the race yesterday. We were good (in happy hour). I guess it was just the weather change. We didn't have any sun yesterday and it was pretty cold. Our car was really good. Today, we had sun on the track and the track temperature was up more than yesterday. We were just loose and we couldn't get it fixed and we couldn't get it tightened up all day."
