ELI GOLD TO JOIN TNN MOTORSPORTS TEAM IN 1996 AS PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER AND AS HOST OF NEW SERIES
Nashville, TN. - August, 1, 1995 - RIS (via fax) - Eli Gold, considered by millions of NASCAR fans as the "voice of NASCAR," will step in front of the cameras in February 1996 as a member of the TNN Motorsports team. The announcement of the cable-exclusive agreement was made today by David Hall, Senior Vice President, Cable Networks, Gaylord Entertainment Company. Gold will host TNN's first live, weekly call-in motorsports talk program in addition to serving as play-by-play announcer for TNN Motorsports' live NASCAR coverage.
"Hands down, Eli Gold is one of the most respected motorsports broadcasters in the country," said Hall. "He brings to TNN Motorsports credibility and respect from the racers as well as a following of loyal fans of the sport. His live call-in talk series is just another example of TNN Motorsports' commitment to NASCAR and the viewers."
TNN's first Saturday night live motorsports call-in series will debut Saturday, February 3, on TNN at 6:00 PM (Eastern time). Telecast live from major NASCAR tracks and locations across America, the one-hour Saturday night series will feature on-set interviews with live audience participation. Viewers will be able to call-in during the live telecast or through voice-mail record their questions via an 800 number serving North America. In addition, race fans will be able to send E-mail on the Internet or join the live Internet chat-line during the show. Also beginning in 1996, Gold will join TNN Motorsports' announce team serving as play-by-play announcer for all of TNN's coverage fo NASCAR Winston Cup Racing plus accompanying Busch Series events and SuperTruck Series By Craftsman events.
"I am excited about stepping out and getting in front of TNN cameras to bring NASCAR racing live to the fans on TNN," said Gold. "TNN Motorsports is a leader in coverage, and I feel my style will fit in just right on TNN. I'm also extremely honored to have the opportunity to share the TNN stage on Saturday nights as host of the network's first live motorsports call-in series." Gold added that the series will incorporate the issues of the day, the hottest drivers, and the excitement of NASCAR racing week in and week out, and most importantly, give the fans the opportunity to express their views and talk with drivers.
The new series will be produced exclusively for TNN by VideoFilm of Aurora, Colo. Tom Hoch will serve as executive producer.
As co-anchor of NASCAR's Motor Racing Network (MRN), Eli Gold has been a part of the radio network since 1976. In addition, he has hosted a weekly syndicated radio talk show since 1983 currently heard on 290 stations nationwide. Since 1990, Gold has hosted "This Week in NASCAR" on Prime Network, adn currently hosts "NASCAR Shop Talk" on ESPN. Since 1986, Gold has been the radio play-by-play voice of the University of Alabama football and basketball teams, broadcasting to a network of 92 stations across the South. His is a three-time Alabama Sportscaster of the Year as voted by his peers in the National Sportcasters and Sportswriters Association. The Associated Press named Gold on two occasions, the acclaimed "Alabama Sportscaster of the Year" award.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and currently residing in Birmingham, Ala., Gold started his sports broadcasting career in 1972 working as a weekend sports reporter with Mutual Broadcasting System. During his early career, Gold handled various play-by-play assignments over the years including professional hockey and baseball.
