Crew chief Darian Grubb confirms the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing team will go to a backup car.
FONTANA, Calif. – With less than five minutes remaining in first practice, Carl Edwards lost control of the No. 19 Subway Toyota off of Turn 4 at Auto Club Speedway.
"We're going to need a backup car," Edwards said over the radio after he got loose and overcorrected his car. “I was trying to be cute and save it.”
Prior to the wreck, Edwards posted the 10th fastest time – 183.814 miles per hour - but dropped to 11th.
Kurt Busch led the session (186.741 mph) followed by Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson.
Edwards has one win (2008), one pole, eight top fives and 14 top 10s in 17 starts at ACS.
