Kansas City, Kansas -- After admitting he kept an early season concussion a secret in order "save" his career, Dale Earnhardt Jr., stepped up and proved he is over the head injury and won the Bud Pole Award for Sunday's race in Kansas.

Earnhardt turned his fast lap in his #8 Chevrolet in 30.350 seconds, a speed of 177.924 mph. His qualifying lap marked a new track record around the 1.5-mile oval. Last week's winner, Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson will start second. Johnson's lap was clocked in at 177.854 mph. His rookie rival, Penske's Ryan Newman will start third.

Earnhardt's DEI teammate Michael Waltrip won the Bud Pole Award for the Busch Series race, will roll his # 15 Chevrolet off of the grid in the fourth position. Evernham Motorsports driver Bill Elliott was the highest qualifying Dodge, he rounds out the top five.

Dale Jarrett, Sterling Marlin and Tony Stewart will start sixth through eighth. Points leader Mark Martin will start ninth while Jeff Gordon closes out the top 10 qualifiers.

Brett Bodine, Kirk Shelmerdine and Carl Long failed to qualify.
