DOVER, Del. (Sept. 19, 1998) Quotes from selected drivers following Bud Pole Qualifying Friday for Sunday's NASCAR Winston Cup Series MBNA Gold 400 at Dover Downs International Speedway:
MARK MARTIN No. 6 Valvoline Ford "That was a good lap. I just want to thank Jimmy Fennig and Shawn Parker, we haven't touched that thing since it unloaded and it was bad fast. That was about a half-tenth slower than we ran in practice. "The sun is out a little bit more than it was, but I probably didn't get quite as good a lap. But I was sure going for it and didn't feel like I left anything on the table. The car's working. That wasn't a lucky lap."
RUSTY WALLACE No. 2 Miller Lite Ford "That's not too bad. I'm pretty happy with that. I told Robin (Pemberton) that I thought I could run a 23-flat and I ran a 23.11, so... I was a little out of the gas too much down in Turn 3, but everywhere else felt really really good. It's the same old car we had here last time and got the pole with and it ran just about as good this time."
DERRIKE COPE No. 30 Gumout Pontiac "That felt pretty good. We had run in the .30s in practice, so, I wasn't too surprised that we did what we did. We're using those T&L motors and we leaned on them pretty hard today and it paid off. I know what I need here because I've won here before. Now, I've just got to find what I really need. Health-wise, I'm fine. I feel like coming to the race track every day and I do really feel good. Now, I feel like I can drive harder and better than I was doing after I got hurt."
KEVIN LEPAGE No. 16 PRIMESTAR Ford "I've got one guy to thank and that's Mark Martin. I was struggling here with the PRIMESTAR Taurus and James Ince went over to Mark and Jimmy Fennig and talked to them. He said, 'Here, this is what we've got in the car, try it.' That was a pretty good lap. It was nail-biting, but since I've been with these guys I've been struggling in qualifying trying to figure out what this Taurus wants in qualifying, but maybe here at Dover I figured it out."
BOBBY LABONTE No. 18 Interstate Batteries Pontiac "I had confidence in the car for qualifying, but I got on the brakes a little too hard and stopped the car a little too quick. That might've hurt me a little bit, but I don't know if I could've done any better than that. The guys did a great job. We'll see how it ends up and go racing on Sunday. Usually I slow down here during qualifying because the track gets a little greasy, but we changed a few things on the car this morning and got it better and better. We kept getting quicker and learned a few things. We had a good lap, better than I thought, and we'll have a good starting spot Sunday."
JEFF GORDON No. 24 DuPont Refinishes Chevrolet "We should have gone faster than that. I was hoping to pick up a tenth from what we practiced, but the sun came out and changed the car a little bit. I was sliding around a little bit more than I thought I was going to. I just about spun out coming to take the green, so that got my attention pretty early. I had to make a little bit more of a conservative lap. The car has been driving great. We just missed a little bit on what we should have done based on the sun coming out. This is the same car we ran in Darlington, and I'm pretty sure it's the same car we ran here last time. If it's not, we'd be crazy to bring something different unless it gets better fuel mileage. It's like a new race track. We need to take a look at all the other tracks that need to be a little smoother and bring IRL there. It's definitely improved the track. "I'm a little disappointed, but that was a good lap for us. We did what we needed to do. I really had to back off. I got sideways a couple of times during that lap, especially coming to take the green. I'd much rather bring it back in one piece. That's what we were kind of forced to do. With the sun coming out, it changed the track a little bit. The track is really fast, and Mark Martin put a great lap out there. I didn't think anyone could beat that and they didn't."
JOHN ANDRETTI No. 43 STP Pontiac "I've started up front here several times, but I've never finished up front. It means a lot to qualify up front because you get a better selection on pit road because pit road is so narrow here. As long as I've got an odd number (starting spot) and near the front, that's OK with me. No, I can't really tell the difference in the track. You can see it a lot better than you can feel it."
JERRY NADEAU No. 9 Cartoon Network Ford "I've got a great team. These guys really give me a good car every weekend. This is the first time I've ever qualified here at Dover. This is pretty intimidating. It's gonna be interesting Sunday. I'm pretty excited. The last time here I had a stomach virus, so this is really the first time here for me. It's just a fast cement race track. It's compared to Bristol, but a lot bigger and a lot faster and there's really no room for mistakes here."
DICK TRICKLE No. 90 Heilig-Meyers Ford "The car made a great lap, but the sun came out about six cars before me. We got some heat sync, but what happened is the day changed on us a little bit and you lose performance when you get some heat in the air. We really dropped in performance because of the day. If everybody else had to qualify when we did, they would have been a tenth to 15-hundreths off from what they were earlier too. The day just got away from us a little bit."
DALE JARRETT No. 88 Quality Care Service/Ford Credit Ford "That was a pretty good lap, maybe a little better than we'd run in practice. We might have been able to run a little faster, but the car pushed the nose a little bit when I picked the throttle up coming out of 3 and 4. I think I got through 1 and 2 pretty good. That'll get us a decent starting spot. I'd just like to ask the fans to be with all of the people here in the racing community in saying an extra prayer for Bill and Dan and Ernie and the entire Elliott family. We know it's a difficult time and we need to let them know that we're all praying for them."
RICKY RUDD No. 10 Tide Ford "I'm not really sure. The car pushed a little bit coming off the corner. It didn't push in practice. We had one set of tires that it really drove fast on and that's what we drove our quick lap, but I'm not really sure if it was time of day or what, we're not really sure."
