Newman Wins Pole

RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 alltel Dodge Avenger)
NOTE: Newman won his second straight pole and third of the season.

"Honestly I didn't think it was going to be as good of a lap as it was speedwise. We hadn't been that fast in practice and this one didn't feel any better, but it was smoother and more put together. I want to thank everybody at Penske Racing for giving me an opportunity to drive a good racecar. Michael Nelson and the guys gave me a good racecar, and this is one of my favorite racetracks. I'm excited about it trying to capitalize on the starting position.

"I think our COT program is strong. We haven't qualified that well with it. I think our race performance in it has been better than the results. This is one of my favorite racetracks. It's tough, but I'm looking forward to it.

"I wouldn't say we're back full force, but a percentage of us is. We need some better results on raceday, and we're working on that. The guys are doing a good job. Actually today's practice was really rough. We got two qualifying runs in and didn't have a whole lot to show for it. I think we were 12th, but qualifying here is so tight. I'm just happy to be on top.

"I think the Avenger has really been strong the entire season. We just haven't had good finishes with it. Darlington was nice, but outside of that, that was our only bright spot. Sunday is going to be a conservative race. We're going to try to make sure we get to the end, but we also want to make sure we're P-1 at the end.

"There's no doubt about it. I think we can make The Chase. We went from 13th to 18th in one race. It's really tight right there. Tons of racing to go, and I think our performance needs to speak for itself when it comes to the points and we look forward to the opportunity. This used to be my track, but that doesn't mean it still isn't. We've proven we've got a fast racecar. We've just got to make it right for the race. It'll be interesting to see how the Avenger adapts to the long runs. We've got a smaller fuel cell than we used to here. Pit road is treacherous, so there will be a lot of question marks for the rest of the weekend."
