Truex Finds Spark with 6th-Place Finish at Dover
Dover, Del. (June 1, 2008) -- Martin Truex Jr. was a hoping a return to Dover (Del.) International Speedway, where he won last seson, would provide his team with the spark it needs. A sixth-place finish in Sunday's Best Buy 400, may have been just what the team need to lauch a similar run to the one they had last season, after winning at the Monster Mile.
After starting the event in 20th, Truex's day was almost a short one. The No. 38 of David Gilliland made contact with the car of Elliot Sadler, causing Sadler to spin. Truex dove to the inside, but a group of cars behind him were not as fortunate. The incident involved a total of 10 cars and caused the race to be black flagged for 15 minutes
Crew chief Kevin "Bono" Manion called for a number of changes on pit stops throughout the race, hoping to remedy the loose condition of the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet.
After a caution for debris on lap 332, Truex pitted for the last time and Manion instructed tire specialist Russell Simpson to take air out of both front Goodyear tires. Truex reentered the race in 10th, but eventual race winner and leader Kyle Busch was coming hard. The changes had the desired effect, and Truex was able to hold off Busch and stay on the lap down. He eventually passed a number of lead-lap cars before finishing sixth, his fourth top-10 of the season.
"The car was a lot better in happy hour but I think the rain yesterday changed the track," Truex said. "Plus, the weather was a lot hotter today and I think those two things made the car loose. The guys kept working on the car and had it really good there at the end. I wish we could've gotten one more caution flag. I think we would've finished even better than we did.
"This was the type of day we needed. Hopefully this will get us pointed in the right direction. We had a good test in Pocono so I think we'll be good there next week."
Truex remained 15th in 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup driver points, 83 points out of 12th.
