JEREMY MAYFIELD ON DOVER
"We're looking forward to Dover. We've always been pretty good there, and we finished second there last fall. We tested two cars there a few weeks ago and both of them were great. I think our Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge is going to have a good race."
STATS & FACTS
JEREMY MAYFIELD AT DOVER
* Mayfield has made 19 starts at Dover with four top-five and five top-10 finishes at the track. He earned his top finish of second after starting 28th in last fall's MBNA America 400. Mayfield earned a Dover pole in fall of 2000 -- the fifth of his career. He has led three races for 130 laps.
MAYFIELD BEGINS 2004 SEASON IN HIGH GEAR
* After 12 races, Mayfield's average finish of 17.75 is nearly 10 spots ahead of what it was at this point last year. Mayfield has also earned 379 more points, and ranks 19 positions higher in the points standings than he did heading into the 2003 MBNA America 400.
No. 19 DEW CREW -- JACKMAN
* Ed Watkins, Jack Man for the No. 19 Dew Crew, will be out for the remainder of the season after suffering injuries to both knees in April. He is replaced by Rick Pennington for this weekend's race at Dover. Pennington also subbed at Talladega, California and Charlotte.
ADDING UP THE POINTS
* Mayfield moves to 14th in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series points standings after Charlotte. He is 148points out of the top 10, and 448 points out of first place.
LAST WEEKEND AT CHARLOTTE
Jeremy Mayfield qualified 15th with a run of 29.220 seconds, 184.805 mph. He continued to run in the top 10 throughout the race, even though his car developed handling problems in the late afternoon sunshine. The No. 19 Dew Crew worked through each pit stop to adjust the air pressure and track bar to improve the handling, and the changes paid off. As the sun set and the track cooled down, the Dodge kept improving and soon Mayfield was running third behind teammate Kasey Kahne. When a caution on lap 369 sent Mayfield to the pits for two fresh tires, he was penalized for speeding off pit road and had to restart at the end of the longest line of cars. But he worked his way back up to 10th place by lap 380. A second caution flew on lap 395 that shuffled the field on the restart, and Mayfield could not hold on to his position in the heated battle of the closing laps. Mayfield finished eighth for the day, earning 142 points for the team's efforts. He moved up two spots in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series points race to 14th, just 448 points behind the series leader.
