Riggs Finishes 31st at Dover
DOVER, Del. (Sept. 26, 2004)-- A faulty wheel bearing sent Scott Riggs' Valvoline Chevrolet behind the wall for numerous laps during Sunday's MBNA America 400, forcing the team to a 31st-place finish at Dover International Speedway.
Starting 18th, the rookie driver fought an extremely tight racecar during the opening laps of the 400-lap, 400-mile event, but ultimately it was an equipment malfunction that cost the team a better finish.
"We had a wheel bearing go out on the left front," explained Riggs, who finished 37 laps behind the leader. "We had to come behind the wall and change it out. Then, with about 40 laps to go, the wheel bearing broke again-- on a different set and a different piece. So our luck definitely wasn't there today."
"The car was real tight at the beginning of the race and we kept throwing things at it," Riggs continued. "We were working on getting better but unfortunately we had the wheel bearing problem and that took us out of any contention."
Crew chief Doug Randolph echoed Riggs' thoughts.
"The car wasn't where we needed it to be but it was getting better," he said. "Then the wheel bearing broke and that pretty much ended any chances of a decent finish.
"We'll go back home and get ready for Talladega. We're really stepping up with our superspeedway program so hopefully we can go down there and get a solid finish."
The Nextel Cup series will enter its last restrictor-plate race of the season next weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. The EA Sports 500 will be broadcast live on NBC 1:30 p.m. EDT
