Ryan Newman in the No. 12 Alltel Ford was the highest qualifying Raybestos® Rookie at Dover. He will start fourth in Sunday'S Race. Newman has now been top qualifying rookie in 15 Winston Cup Races this season.
"I messed up a little bit there on the first one but overall it was a good run for the Alltel Ford. This is one race and Sunday is another race. We'll just have to see how things go. Hopefully Rusty (Wallace, his teammate) and I can end up somewhere there in the top-five. We'll just have to see how things go with everybody else."
YOU'VE BEEN REALLY GOOD IN BOTH PRACTICE AND QUALIFYING THIS SEASON.
"If you do it once you can do it again, that's my motto. It's good to run fast in practice; qualifying is what makes the difference. If we do it in practice we should be able to do it in qualifying."
DO YOU THINK THE TRACK CHANGE FROM PRACTICE TO QUALIFYING?
"I didn't feel it change a whole lot, just the loss of grip. My car felt pretty much the same, balance wise, but it was a loss of grip overall."
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S CHEVROLET:
"It was okay. We had some problems and got behind. We only had 20 minutes of practice. It was a decent lap. I thought it was going to be faster than that but still better than most Fridays that we've had in a while."
SELECTED QUOTES FROM RYAN NEWMAN POST QUALIFYING PRESS CONFERENCE
TALK ABOUT YOUR QUALIFYING LAP AND HOW YOU'VE BEEN RUNNING OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS.
"The last two weeks have been really great. Today we unloaded pretty quick and we were fastest in practice which makes it tough on you because you don't have any excuse going into qualifying. You have the fastest race car. The ironic part of it all was that Rusty was fourth in practice and I was first and we just flipped that for qualifying. It was a good run overall for the Penske Fords and hopefully things will go well on Sunday."
WHAT WERE THE TRACK CONDITIONS LIKE AND WHAT ADJUSTMENTS DID YOU MAKE FOR THEM?
"We didn't adjust anything and didn't really change anything. We just lost a little overall grip. That's why we couldn't knock off the same lap speeds that we had before. That was similar to a lot of other drivers. Overall it was a good qualifying effort for the Alltel Ford and happy to have two Penske cars in the top-five."
AFTER WINNING LAST WEEK, HOW MUCH CONFIDENCE DO YOU HAVE COMING BACK TO A TRACK LIKE DOVER?
"To me it's a matter of confidence for the entire team. I approach it the same way I did before. I got a win underneath my belt in a points race but I'm not going to drive any harder or do anything different. That the big thing, just keep go out there and keep doing the same things we have been doing."
