BEHIND THE HAULER CHAT WITH KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 29 GM GOODWRENCH MONTE CARLO SS:
TALK ABOUT YOUR MINDSET COMING INTO THIS WEEKEND "It's really good. We're really excited about everything that we've done. We're just really up for the challenge for the next nine weeks to really focus on what we need to do and try to race for the championship."
HOW MUCH OF A DISTRACTION IS THE ALLEGATION OF CHEATING "I don't think it's too much of a distraction. This week we kind of dug into it, and figure out who tried to steer everything off to the side. But as we talked to people and listened to the reports of what SPEED had to say and everything that they have; you know, they've indicated to us that they just want to keep their TV shows entertaining and kind of prolong things as much as they can to give them something to talk about on their shows. I think based off of Chris Long's (SPEED channel VP of Studio Production) reports this week and saying what he said that it's pretty obvious that they just don't want to believe the truth. They want to keep their reports going up on their shows. When they actually call people out on your shows and try to keep their shows entertaining, it's pretty obvious that they just want to keep a false story going into the future.
So we don't read much into it other than when you're running good, you're going to have these things pop up. It's no different than any other time you race for a championship."
DO THINK THE STORY WAS PLANTED BY ANOTHER TEAM? "Oh, I'm sure it was. Right now, our guys have worked really hard to do what they need to do to make things go well. And you know, it's a pretty common practice in this garage to try to see what your competitor's teams are made of."
HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT ALL THIS? "I stayed around for the latter part of inspection. I knew there were no problems anywhere. Obviously last week they took a lot of the cars tires to the dump tank and I'm sure that's where a lot of this stuff got run rampant. But I stayed for the whole inspection process and the car was loaded up. (John) Darby congratulated me and I went to the airport."
WHAT DOES THIS DO TO YOUR TEAM? DOES IT MAKE THEM MAD? "I don't think so. I think we've all been kind of laughing about is just because of the fact that it's such a frenzy to see how things take place and how they take momentum and travel through the garage. And as always, the media makes a really big deal out of something. And it's unfortunate that everybody has to report on something that they know is not true. So it's just the way the media works, I guess; and you just laugh about it and go on."
WITH ALL THAT SAID, YOU STILL HAVE THE POINT LEAD. WHAT'S IT LIKE HAVING A CUSHION LIKE THIS WITH NINE RACES TO GO? "Well, I think it's great to be in this position. It's a lot of fun to just have the chance to race for it. We're excited. With all the hard work and everything that we've done, it's exciting to have the opportunity to race for the championship. So, we're having fun with everything and still just excited to have the opportunity."
KNOWING THAT YOU GOT OFF TO SUCH A GOOD START, HOW MUCH DOES STRESS DOES THAT TAKE AWAY? "I don't think it takes anything away. You just have to keep racing and doing the things that got you here. Obviously there is a lot more attention on everything than there was before this right now, but we have to keep on doing what we've been doing."
HOW DO YOU FEEL COMING IN AS THE POINT LEADER? "I don't feel any different than I did last week. We've got nine more weeks to go, and if we can be in contention with two or three (races) to go, we'll be happy."
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE GOOD AND BAD OF GOING TO KANSAS NEXT WEEK? "We'll get there when we get there."
ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT TALLADEGA? "I think that's the wild card in the whole deal. There are just so many things that you can't control there. Right now we're just focused on this race. Next week we'll focus on Kansas and then Talladega."
