Team Chevy Drivers Capture Four of Top-10 Starting Positions at Dover
Dover, DE - Mark Martin qualified the No. 5 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet in the third starting position for Sunday's Autism Speaks 400 at Dover International Speedway.
Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet, will start fifth followed by Ryan Newman, No. 39 US Army Chevrolet, in the sixth starting spot. Clint Bowyer, No. 33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Chevrolet, will roll off seventh to give Team Chevy four of the top-10 drivers qualifying for the race.
A total of 15 Chevrolet drivers will take the green flag for the 400-lap/400-mile race.
Martin Truex, Jr. (Toyota) won the pole. Kasey Kahne (Ford) and Kyle Busch (Toyota) complete the top-five starters for the race.
MARK MARTIN, NO. 5 GODADDY.COM CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 3RD:
"Usually if it spins, it ain't no big thing. You just leave it wide open and you chase it. But the motor started to rev up and it got aimed and it was like oh, I'm crashing. So even when I let off and caught up, it was aimed down the race track. We weren't very fast. But that sure was fast. I want to thank the GoDaddy.com crew and Chevrolet and everybody for all their support. That's the line when you do better than you should and somehow or another, we did. That was sheer stupidity."
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 5TH:
A COUPLE YEARS AGO YOU SPUN ON THE FRONT STRETCH AND DIDN'T HIT ANYTHING. YOU GOT A LITTLE EDGY OFF TURN 4 THIS TIME TOO! "Yeah, first of all, that spin a few years back was so cool. I can't believe I didn't hit anything."
YOU DESERVE A TROPHY FOR THAT ONE "I do! Some say it was luck and I agree luck had a part in it but if you could have seen me inside that race car; man I was steering wheel, gas, brake, all kinds of things. It was awesome. I'm glad I didn't hit anything then. I'm thankful that I made it back this lap. My Turn 3 and 4 area, I let off the gas into (Turn) 3, the car hit the race track and it more had the car wobbling through the corner and I wasn't sure which way the car was going to commit because I saw a couple inches somewhere it was going to be tight, and somewhere it was going to be loose and I just didn't have the confidence in which way I was going to be pointed to jump on the gas as hard as I needed to. But it was a decent lap. And we're at a great race track for us, fortunately."
RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 39 U.S. ARMY CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 6TH:
WERE YOU BETTER AT ONE END OF THE TRACK VERSUS THE OTHER? "To me, (Turns) 1 and 2 feels better than (Turns) 3 and 4. Turns 3 and 4 feels like it's just a little bit rougher. I think we're giving up a little bit down there and just not getting it quite right. But it's a good run for the U.S. Army Chevrolet and I think it'll be a top 10 someplace; I hope. It's a nice place to start in the top 10."
CLINT BOWYER, NO. 33 CHEERIOS/HAMBURGER HELPER CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 7TH:
"It was a good run. A good day for us. Not quite what we wanted, we got a little bit too loose but it was a good day."
JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 BASS PRO SHOPS/TRACKER BOATS CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 11TH:
"We qualified probably better than where we thought we were going to. We weren't very good in practice. The team made some pretty solid changes. We just didn't unload very good today. We have a little bit of work to do for tomorrow. The team has done a really good job even if we don't unload well to make the right changes. We'll go back and talk about it. I feel like even if we don't have a good practice, we seem to get good data from it and good stuff to try. I think we are going to be ok."
JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DUPONT CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 15TH:
"Well, that was different than practice, for sure. We made some adjustments and going first, you never really want to go out first, but we've been going out like 35th the last four weeks so I guess it was our time. The DuPont Chevrolet has been good, but right there, I just tried to squeeze the gas a little too hard in the middle of (Turns) 1 and 2 and it came around on me like it did here a year ago so luckily we saved the car and brought it back for an ok lap."
