ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (Qualified 6th)
THAT WAS A VERY GOOD LAP UNDER DIFFICULT CONDITIONS.
"Yeah, you know, with the people wrecking right there in front of us. We really didn't know what the track was going to do, and Todd made some great calls on some air-pressure adjustments right before we went out on pit road to adjust what we thought what was going to happen on the track, and it paid off. We think that may be a top-six or -seven starting position on Sunday, and that's a great place to be."
SO, BLOCKING OUT WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE YOU WENT OUT WASN'T TOO DIFFICULT?
"Michael and Greg are both great drivers. You know something had to happen to make those guys do that. I might've taken it a little easy coming to the green and lost a little time just to get a feel for the car as much as I could, and the track, but all in all it was a great effort. We got a great race car. It's a twin to the car we had at Texas and Charlotte. We think we'll have a really good day come Sunday."
MARK MARTIN - No. 6 Viagra Taurus (Qualified 7th)
"I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to work with Pat Tryson. He's done such an awesome job with this Viagra team and this Taurus. We've been gaining momentum all year. They just deserve so much better than what we have right now, 15th in the points. I really believe this is a top-five race team. Maybe we can get lucky this summer and have things quit going against us. That deal at Charlotte was a heart breaker. All we can do is come back and try to recover."
YOUR PRIDE IN THIS TEAM REALLY SHOWS EVERY WEEK.
"I can't run good without a good race car. I've tried that for a long, long time, and it just won't work. I just can't tell you how appreciative I am and what an honor it is to be back in race cars that will really work, and with a race team that will do anything - anything - to make it good for me. I really like Pat, I really like my team. We've just had the worst luck, we deserve so much better than what we've got for a point standing. But on the good side, at least we're going fast every week."
KURT BUSCH - No. 97 Sharpie/IRWIN Taurus (Qualified 11th)
"Very pleased with today's effort. The Sharpie team has done a great job transitioning from our test to today's activities. It was overcast when we were testing here, so it's helping our effort out. We committed to going to qualifying practice this morning, where some teams went toward race practice because of the weather that's moving in. I hope it's not all for naught. We've got a good car, and if we get rained out we'll start eighth, if we qualify we should be in the top 10, so either way. So far, the weekend's started off good."
TRACK CONDITIONS DIFFERENT NOW THAN DURING PRACTICE?
"It always seems to loosen itself up to a certain point, and when it goes over that edge then it begins to get tighter and tighter and tighter, and it usually does that after the first race. Right now it continues to get loose, and we were just a little bit on the free side for that lap."
JEFF BURTON - No. 99 Roush Racing Taurus (Qualified 22nd)
"That was okay. We worked on race stuff all morning, only made one qualifying run and just kind of threw something at it there. I screwed the first lap up. The first lap needed to be our fastest and I just messed it up, so that's going to cost us some, but came back with a decent lap. That's not great, but it's not terrible."
DECENT PICK-UP FROM PRACTICE DESPITE DIFFICULT CONDITIONS.
"I was a little nervous about watching people wreck, for sure. But, like I said, we spent most of the morning on race trim. The car's comfortable, we just need to find some speed. I messed the first lap up, I just didn't do a good job driving the first lap and that cost us some because the first lap was the one we really needed to get really good, and I didn't do a good job there, so I'm disappointed in that, but came back with a decent second lap."
RICKY RUDD - No. 21 "Keep It Genuine" Taurus (Qualified 28th)
"Just tight on exit. Left on a little speed on the table. It started pushing coming off both laps, and just kind of killed the lap time. Hoping for more, just didn't get it. We're not too disappointed. We worked on race set-up just about all morning just in case it rained us out, so we're pretty happy with that."
IS IT DIFFICULT TO BLOCK OUT THE STOPPAGES, LIKE THE RAIN?
"Not really, it's not a big issue. It's not that big of a deal, really. We sort of elected, we took it upon ourselves, to spend the majority of our short practice time on race set-up. That definitely has to affect your qualifying effort, but I think many guys did the same thing, knowing the weather's coming. We ran a .90, I hoped for a .70, so we missed it by two-tenths. I know where it's at. The front end pushed a little, pushed the exit in both corners, and that was the difference in the watch. It wouldn't have put us on the pole, but it would've put us higher up than we are."
DALE JARRETT - No. 88 UPS Taurus (Qualified 29th)
IT WAS A SLIGHT PICK-UP FROM PRACTICE.
"The key word there was 'slight' pick-up, but everybody else is picking up quite a bit, so we just didn't get enough."
GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 National Guard Taurus (Qualified 40th)
"I just got loose getting up off of two there, and this track is not very forgiving at all. It kind of got away from me there, and I'm not sure if the track's a little bit slick or cooled off a little bit with that rain shower, but just lost the grip getting up off the corner."
MICHAEL WALTRIP HAD PROBLEMS IN THE SAME CORNER.
"This race track, you know, we just got done qualifying the Busch car, and, man, you really gotta go. There's no room to just kind of get a good lap, you gotta get a good, good lap. So, I was trying hard, and it looks like they're going to blow the race track now, just precautionary. Maybe there was something out there for me, but I don't think there was."
WILL THE CAR BE REPAIRED OR WILL YOU BRING OUT THE BACK-UP?
"Doug and I have been discussing it and it looks like our back-up car is just as good or maybe even better than this car, so it's a car we led a lot at Bristol, so we think we're going to get that car out."
