Home Depot driver Tony Stewart returns to Dover Downs International Speedway for the MBNA Gold 400 - the last Northeast race of the 1999 season - following a second place finish in New Hampshire. At the Monster Mile in June, Stewart qualified 24th, led the most laps and finished fourth.
Heading into Dover, Stewart remains fourth in the standings with 3,683 points. No rookie has finished the season in the top five since James Hylton was second in 1966. In 26 races, Stewart has two poles, one win, nine top-fives, and 17 top-10s to his credit. He has completed 7,042 laps out of the possible 7,413, the most of any driver. Stewart has led 24 times in 12 races for a total of 930 laps and his finishing average in the last six races is 4.83. Stewart also has scored more Winston Cup championship points than any driver in that six race period
Home Depot and Habitat for Humanity: The Home Depot has launched an unprecedented philanthropic initiative tied to its NASCAR sponsorship to benefit Habitat for Humanity International. Through the sale of commemorative merchandise, the program's goal is to raise funds - expected to be at least $4 million - to build more than 100 houses throughout North America. Stewart also will run a special Habitat for Humanity paint scheme during the Oct. 10 UAW-GM Quality 500 in Charlotte.
As part of the special program, Habitat for Humanity representatives and homeowners in Richmond, Va., Loudon, N.H., Dover, Del., and Martinsville, Va., will be invited to attend races in their local markets. This week, Dover Habitat homeowners Jim and Tony Diogo will be guests of NASCAR and honorary members of the #20 Home Depot team for the MBNA Gold 400. Tony Stewart, Driver -- (Fourth in standings with 3,683 points) On Racing at Dover: "I'm really looking forward to going back to Dover. We led the most laps there in June and had a serious shot at a win if we hadn't had to pit for fuel. Since then, this first-year Home Depot team has matured so much that I believe we realistically have a shot at another top-five finish this weekend."
"I really like Dover. It reminds me of some of the tracks I competed on in midgets and Silver Crown cars. The banks make it very fast but it's wide enough to really work traffic well during the race."
On Last Two Race Finishes: "What a great two-week period this Home Depot team has had. A win and a 2nd place finish back-to-back. It's unbelievable as a rookie team that we've had the opportunity to run this well. We're still working on the pit stops, but overall we just keep digging in, sticking to our game plan, and it's working."
