Rusty Wallace Announces Retirement after 2005 Season
ROGER PENSKE (Owner Penske Racing South)
"All of the team members at Penske Racing South, some 235 people that pull together every day to try to make you a winner. You (Rusty Wallace) certainly have been a winner in my mind. We go back to that first race in Atlanta, and that was an indication of the kind of driver you were and the kind of person. When I think about Rusty, I certainly think about Patti. That's his partner. I think about Greg and Katie and Stephen, the team behind a great driver. And mom and dad and brothers and all the family, you guys have been terrific. For me to come to the races and see the continued support...behind every race driver it's the family, the mother, the father and the people around them. Today is a special day for you folks. It's hard to think a great driver says it's time. That's the position of a great driver to say I know when it's time of me to move on. That doesn't mean he's going to be on a slow walk down during the next year. We're counting on a big, big year. We're counting on more success this year. The win this year was terrific.
"Rusty has been a friend, a partner, a great driver. When you think about this sport and the sponsors that have come into this sport over the last 20 years, we've got a sponsor in Miller Brewing Co. that's been with us the entire 14 years I've been associated with Rusty. I can tell you today they're still with us, and they're going to be the ones that make this final lap, this final runway with Rusty a big success. I want to thank them.
"We're behind you 100 percent. You're our friend, and that's important in this sport. You've got one here and from 235 people. Thank you and Patti and everybody else."
