CASEY ATWOOD (No. 19 Dodge Dealers Dodge Intrepid R/T)
NOTE: Atwood scored the best finish among the Raybestos Rookie of the Year drivers. He finished 14th and led the way for all rookies for the fifth time this season.
"We had a great car. I guess we ran over something. There wasn't anything wrong with the tire. I guess I ran over something because I felt it go down all the way down the back straightaway. I got into three and it came all the way apart. Luckily I didn't get into the wall. I was able to get in the pits and not go too far behind. We were able to make up the lap. At the end, there just wasn't enough time. We got up to 14th and that was about all we could get.
"I felt my tire slowly going down all the way down the back straightaway. It didn't just pop on me. I didn't feel me hit anything, but I'd say that's probably what happened. We didn't think this would happy. Sammy (crew chief Johns) told me we were safe on everything, air pressure and camber and everything and we weren't going to have any problem with the right front, so we probably just hit something on the race track.
"When you're up front all day, you can kind of relax and you don't have to drive your butt off all day. I drove really hard there after I had the right front go down to make as many spots up as I could, but it felt like a pretty short race.
"It's disappointing. I don't think we would have finished any worse than second or third. I think we had a good shot at winning. If we had had more time, we could have got back up there. I'm happy. We got the pole and started off well. We thought we'd be able to close it out, but we just had some bad luck at the end.
"I think we had a really good car at Kansas City and didn't get to show that. We wrecked on the first lap. We had a good car at Indy and wrecked about 50 laps into that one. It was fun leading and running up front out there. I look forward to doing it some more.
"We were good on new tires. Once our tires wore out, we evened up with everybody. On new tires, we were better than everybody."
STERLING MARLIN (No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"I think we were going to have a pretty good car, but we just never got a chance to see. That's the way it goes. We've had a lot of good luck this season, but we didn't have any today. Maybe it'll turn around next week at Rockingham."
WARD BURTON (No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"I guess we're going to have to come out here and test to get any better. We can't see to get any better for some reason here. We just couldn't get the nose to work."
STACY COMPTON (No. 92 Kodiak Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"We stayed on the lead lap and raced all day, but we still weren't where we needed to be. We fought the thing all day. They made some great calls in the pits and made good adjustments. We just couldn't get it dialed in."
BUCKSHOT JONES (No. 44 Georgia Pacific Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"I thought at the end of the first green flag run that we might be able to figure this out. Bryant (crew chief Frazier) made the right calls, and we started moving to the front. I just got more comfortable with the car and the track. We probably could have finished higher, but I'm happy. The pit stops were really good all day."
