Nemechek Irate After Being Collected in Accident

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2005) -- Joe Nemechek was blazing hot and he had good reason to be. The U.S. Army driver was collected in an accident Thursday in the second Gatorade Duel 150 here at Daytona International Speedway.

While cruising in ninth place with 24 laps remaining in the 60-lap qualifying race, Nemechek could not avoid the spinning cars in front of him. His 01 black and gold Chevrolet suffered severe damage and the team will be forced to go to the backup car and start from the rear of the field for Sunday's Daytona 500.

The incident was caused when Kevin Harvick turned around the lead car of Jimmie Johnson on Lap 36.

Nemechek, who was not injured in the incident, was quite succinct when asked about his take on what happened as he left the infield care center.

"I think you need to ask Kevin Harvick -- he drove stupid -- totally ridiculous. He caused a bunch of people good racecars, hard work, a lot of money and they ought to make him pay for it. I had a good racecar and I'll have another good one on Sunday - the same car I drove in the Shootout."

With two practices remaining before the 500, the Army team will have a backup car brought to Daytona from the team's shop in Concord, N.C.
