Nemechek Claims 14th Starting Spot For Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2004) -- A strong effort by Joe Nemechek in Thursday's 125-mile qualifying race lifted the U.S. Army driver to a 14th starting positon for Sunday's Daytona 500.

Nemechek, who started the 50-lap race fourth, ran in the top five for the majority of the race. But near the end of the event, he got shuffled out of the draft, costing the No. 01 U.S. Army/USG Chevrolet a couple of positions.

"The good news is we had a fast car today and we're ready for Sunday," said Nemechek. "There was no need to be overly aggressive at the end. We were qualfied and didn't want to get into a wreck and go to the backup car. I like the feel of this 01 U.S. Army/USG car."

Sunday's Daytona 500 will be televised on NBC. The green flag is scheduled to drop at 1:30 p.m. EST.
