NOTE: In his first time testing in the Evernham Motorsports Dodge, Mayfield clocked the third fastest lap in Tuesday's test at 182.046 mph.

"This is the first time we got to test together, and I think things went extremely well today. I'm happy with it. Sammy (crew chief Johns) and Ray and all the guys over there did a great job and everything went smooth. This is probably the best I've ever been down here testing as far as the progress went today. We're happy with that. It's like we've been working together forever. It's pretty amazing to me that things went so smooth today. There's not really been a period that I had to get used to them or the way they do things. There's things I like in a car they don't know about, but everything went so smooth today that it was pretty scary.

"I'm so excited about this deal. They've got my confidence where it's never been. It's probably as high as it's ever been, not just because of today, but it's been building up. I just can't wait to get back down here and start racing and get through Daytona and keep going the rest of the year.

"I think this allows us an opportunity to kind of see what the other guy's got instead of coming down here and not knowing what the Fords and Chevrolets have done. Everybody can see what the other cars are doing and know that nobody is sandbagging.

"They had a plan (for testing) and we've just been knocking everything off the plan, camber, springs, shocks, we've tried a little bit of everything. We found some things that slowed us down and some things that picked us back up. Bill and I are running pretty much exactly the same thing. Some things we didn't try, they did. We'll go back and put it all together and see what we've all got. We came off the truck pretty fast and feel pretty good about being prepared for this test.

"We know if that happens (owner Evernham takes a vacation) that we're doing good. We're on a mission, I can tell you that, a mission to be on a mission. I haven't been in a race car for awhile, but it feels like yesterday now. They've been so good about taking me and making me feel like this has been my home for a long time. I feel real comfortable with everybody there. I was a little nervous this morning about how things were going to work out, but I feel like I've been with these guys forever.

"I know their cars drive well. There's nothing loose in the front end. I go out there and everything is perfect. They take pride in what they do, and I've never seen a bunch of guys work as hard as these guys do. It feels like we've been here forever, and I mean that in a good way. The first time in the car, I feel like I've been working with Sammy and these guys forever. I've been in the shop a lot, too, so we got to know each other, but it seems like we've been working together forever.

"I felt like I was leading the race and it started raining yesterday. I was wanting to get in the car so bad. It paid off today. I saw Ray starting to smile while ago, but he's not smiling yet, so we've got a lot of work to do yet."
