Sterling Marlin Captures Top-5 Finish In Shootout

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 10, 2002)– The Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Sterling Marlin finished fifth in the Shootout at Daytona International Speedway.

Prior to the race, Marlin drew the 13th starting position for the Shootout. At the start of the Shootout, the Coors Light Dodge quickly moved into the top-10 and Marlin never fell out of the top-10 during the event.

On lap 39, the Coors Light team took the required green flag pit stop and put on four tires and fuel in 14.83 seconds.

With 20 laps to go, the Coors Light Dodge was in third position within a five-car break away. On lap 68, Marlin had to check up which allowed Jeff Gordon and Ken Schrader to pass, leaving him in fifth position at the checkered flag.

“ I was trying to make the run on Little E (Dale Earnhardt Jr.), and it looked like he got tight or loose or something,” Marlin said. “ He had to check up, and I had to check up. The 24 drove by us on the outside, but it was another good run for the Coors Light Dodge. This car isn’t as good as the 500 car, so we’ll see what happens.

“ It’s pretty tough to pass, and somebody’s got to go with you. I wish we could run about 5 mph faster. That would put the driving back in it. Maybe we can do something with the spoiler or plate or something.”

Next on the schedule for the No. 40 Coors Light team is the Gatorade 125 Qualifying races on Thursday, Feb. 14.
