GATORADE 125-MILE QUALIFYING RACE NOTES -- feb. 14, 1996

DELMA COWART (No. 0 Master's Inn Economy Ford) -- (Needed to post a practice speed of at least 175 mph to be eligible to start in Thursday's first Gatorade 125-Mile Qualifying Race. He did so in NASCAR Winston Cup practice Wednesday morning.) We worked on it for about four days. We used every little trick in the book that we could, and went out and ran 176 miles an hour, which really pleased everybody on the team. We swore we couldn't run that fast. I know I ain't got a chance of winning the (Gatorade 125) race, but you never know what could happen in a race. If I can get up under somebody and run pretty good all day long, maybe I'll get lucky and get in the (Daytona) 500. (Will he be partying tonight?) Oh, yeah. We've been under a lot of stress. I think it's time to vent our frustrations. Our crew has never won a race, but we ain't lost a party. So we've got to practice for the party coming up Thursday night if we can get into the Daytona 500. Now you're talking about a party! Thursday night is when you ought to be with this bunch. I've got the rowdiest pit crew in racing. Man, I'll match them against anybody. Our goal is last place money in the Daytona 500. If we can do that -- it's worth I guess about $30,000 -- and we can stay here at the Beach for another couple weeks.

TRACY LESLIE (No. 11 NASCAR Busch Series Dieselube Chevrolet) -- (Leslie, who qualified ninth for Saturday's Goody's Headache Powder 300, drove Phil Barkdoll's Barkdoll Racing/X-1R Chevrolet in Wednesday morning's NASCAR Winston Cup practice. Barkdoll said he would drive the car in Thursday's Gatorade 125.) Phil asked me to help him see if we can get her to run any better.

JIM SAUTER (#72 Prodigy Chevrolet) -- (Although Tex Powell owns NASCAR Winston Cup car number 72, for the second straight year he's allowed Dave Marcis to use it for Jim Sauter. The Prodigy sponsorship Marcis carries on his own car is on it as well.
