Smith Collected in 19-Car Melee at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 4, 2010) -- Regan Smith's superspeedway woes continue.

The Furniture Row Racing driver was forced to retire from Saturday night's Sprint Cup race at Daytona International Speedway after being collected in a 19-car wreck with 12 laps remaining. He was credited with a 33rd-place finish in the Coke Zero 400, which started nearly two hours late due to rain and ended well past midnight.

Smith was not injured in the accident, but his car suffered major damage. "It's a mess, one big mess," said crew chief Pete Rondeau about the condition of the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet.

When the "Big One" occurred in Turn 3 at the 2.5-mile oval Smith was running in 20th-place and felt he was in good position to move forward in the closing laps. But for the fourth straight time at a superspeedway event (Daytona and Talladega), Smith was not able to finish the race. He was involved in an early accident in February's Daytona 500 and suffered an engine failure at the last two Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway races (November 2009 and April 2010).

"We'll finish one of these superspeedway races eventually," said Smith, who did post a 12th-place result a year ago in Daytona. "Things happened pretty quickly out there. Somebody in front of the pack had a problem and then it was nothing but smoking cars by the time most of us got there. It was just a typical Daytona/Talladega wreck. You hope you miss it, and if you don't, you go on to the next one. It all comes down to racing luck at these two superspeedway tracks. And we're definitely due for a change of luck."

The race winner was Kevin Harvick. Rounding out the top-five in order were: Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Burton.

The next Sprint Cup race is Saturday night (July 10) at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill.
