LABONTE RECORDS FASTEST SPEED AS GM TEAMS OPEN TESTING AT DAYTONA
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- 1996 NASCAR Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte posted the fastest time of 13 Chevrolet NASCAR Winston Cup teams that opened pre-season testing Saturday at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the all-new Bud Shootout At Daytona (Feb. 8) and the "Great American Race," the 40th Annual Daytona 500 (Feb. 15).
Labonte was clocked at 47.770 seconds, an average speed of 188.403 mph, in one of two Hendrick Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlos that he drove on the day.
Steve Grissom of Gadsden, Ala., who sat alongside Mike Skinner on the front row of last year's Daytona 500, turned in the fourth fastest speed of the day.
"The cars came off the trailer running good," said Grissom. "It's still only the first day, but we feel like we're in the ball game and have something to work with. An awful lot of things need to go right for us to duplicate our success from last year. We felt like we learned a lot last year at Daytona, and we've had time in the off-season to apply that knowledge. We were pretty confident that we would run decent once we got down here."
Grissom was reluctant though to consider himself as being one of the favorites to capture the Daytona 500 pole. "You've got to throw everything that happened last year away. It's too early to even start thinking about that. We've only had one day of testing and the Fords haven't been down here yet, so right now anybody could be the favorite for the pole. There's still a lot of work to do."
The test will continue Sunday. A section of the Oldfield Grandstand is open daily at no charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with access through DAYTONA USA, "The Ultimate Motorsports Attraction." Guided tours of the Speedway are also available from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a nominal fee.
