Day Three of Ford NASCAR Winston Cup Testing

IRWIN QUICKEST ON FINAL DAY OF FORD NASCAR WINSTON CUP TESTING DATE

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie-of-the-Year Candidate Kenny Irwin posted the fastest speed as Ford NASCAR Winston Cup teams concluded their final pre-season test Wednesday at Daytona International Speedway. Teams spent the day preparing for the all-new Bud Shootout At Daytona (Feb. 8) and the "Great American Race," the 40th Annual Daytona 500 (Feb. 15). Irwin was clocked at 47.217 seconds for an average speed of 190.609 mph in his No. 28 Havoline Ford Taurus.

Many drivers are sporting new paint schemes for the upcoming NASCAR Winston Cup season including Brett Bodine, whose race team acquired Paychex as their primary sponsor for 1998.

"Our goal is to come down here and make the show, that's the first thing," said Bodine. "That's what these testing sessions are all about, trying to get your car up to speed where you can comfortably make the Daytona 500. You can't depend on racing your way in on Thursday during the Gatorade 125s. Too many things can happen that can knock you out of a qualifying spot.

"You have to make sure your car has enough speed, so you can depend on your time to get into the race. Once we've accomplished that goal, then we'll concentrate on race setup. Historically, we've had good Daytona race setups, but historically we don't qualify well, so that's going to be our focus during the test. We'll try to get as much speed out of our cars as possible.

"I think it's still too early to tell how the Taurus is going to be. Hopefully during the Bud Shootout qualifying race we'll be able to do some competitive testing and lay down some real nice ground work for Thursday's Gatorade 125s."

Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway kicks off with the world's greatest sports car race -- the Rolex 24 At Daytona Jan. 31-Feb. 1 -- and climaxes with the Daytona 500 on Feb. 15. Great seats still remain for many Speedweeks events, for ticket information call the Speedway Ticket Office at (904) 253-7223.
