Dave Marcis Sets Fastest Time in Second-Round Qualifying for Daytona 500
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.(February 8, 1999) -- Dave Marcis ran the fastest lap in second round qualifying Monday at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for Sunday's running of the Daytona 500. Marcis ran a lap of 192.794 mph in the Realtree Camouflage Chevrolet.
"We ran a little bit faster than Saturday, but not as quick as we hoped," said Marcis, who is hoping to run his 32nd consecutive Daytona 500. His speed is 23rd fastest of the overall qualifiers for "The Great American Race."
Marcis edged out Steve Park, who ran a lap of 192.592 mph. Derrike Cope was third, followed by Robert Pressley, Dick Trickle, Ted Musgrave, Jim Sauter and Norm Benning.
Tuesday's schedule includes final qualifying for the Daytona 500, and opening qualifying for the NAPA 300 NASCAR Busch Series race and Discount Auto Parts 200 NASCAR Goody's Dash Series.
Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart will start Sunday's Daytona 500 from the front row, after posting the fastest speeds in Saturday's opening qualifying session. Positions three through 30 will be set in Thursday's Gatorade 125-Mile Qualifying Races. Positions 31 through 36 will be filled through fastest qualifying runs, regardless of day, while the remainder of the 43-car field will be filled through NASCAR provisional starting procedures.
Randy LaJoie ran the fastest lap in practice for Saturday's NAPA Auto Parts 300, getting a quick speed of 190.351 in the Phoenix Racing Chevrolet. Dave Blaney ran the second quickest lap of the day, 189.685, in the Amoco Pontiac.
"Based on today's practice, I think we've got a shot at the pole, but it's hard to tell," said Blaney, a former champion in the World of Outlaws series. "We think we've got a little bit left, and who knows?"
