Team UPS Kicks off 2002 at Season Favorite
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., February 5, 2002 --- The green flag drops on the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup season at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 17, 2002. Three-time Daytona 500 winner Dale Jarrett looks to become only the third driver in Winston Cup history to score four wins in the "Super Bowl" of NASCAR. The Daytona 500 is set for Sunday, Feb. 17 with a 12:30 p.m. start time.
Jarrett Says Daytona Is First Step Toward 2002 Championship
"Everyone likes to go to Daytona and run well, and it is the first step in the big picture which is a Winston Cup championship," Jarrett said. "Robert Yates Racing takes a lot of pride in winning the 500 or running well. We put a lot of time and effort into getting ready for this one race. Certainly winning the Daytona 500 is not a requirement for winning the championship. When we won the championship in '99, we actually ended up on our roof in the 500, so one isn't a prerequisite for the other. But, that being said, it's a nice way to start the season. It's a good momentum boost going into Rockingham the next weekend, and for the rest of the season."
Daytona Is First Test For New Crew Chief Jimmy Elledge
"Fortunately, my first race with this team is at a track where they've had great speedway cars and great speedway success," Elledge said of his first outing with the #88 team. "I want to keep doing what they've done in the past and see if there's anything I can add. The way this deal has been set up I'm hoping to be able to ease myself into the program. The biggest thing for me is that I just want to be able to add something to this race team."
Fords Get Rules Change For The Daytona 500
Following Winston Cup qualifying and the Budweiser Shootout last weekend, NASCAR announced the spoilers on Fords will be reduced a quarter-of-an-inch. Ford teams had been lobbying for a change since testing began in January.
"This should help because we've known all along that the biggest problem area we have is too much drag," Jarrett said of the change. "I hope this does the trick and I applaud NASCAR for realizing that we had a need and for taking the initiative to make a change. We hope this gives us a chance in the Daytona 500."
