Robinson Anticipates Daytona 500 Debut
Concord, NC (February 6, 2002) Shawna Robinson is no stranger to making debuts in racing. But, the debut in the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway has a special meaning for her. According to Robinson, "Daytona is one of the most elite tracks in all of motorsports and symbolizes NASCAR racing. It will be a big thrill for me to race in the Daytona 500 and it makes me feel like I am officially part of the NASCAR family."
Robinson is anxious to race in the Daytona 500 but a little nervous. She's anxious to race in the Daytona 500 because of the history and the reputation of the race but nervous mainly because of the pressure to make it. "It is the first day of the rest of my life," Robinson stated. "Making the Daytona 500 is the security blanket on my career."
Robinson tested at Daytona and feels confident her BAM Racing team is ready for combat. "We tested at Daytona with a logical approach. We took a car specific to NASCAR rules and specifications. We didn't want to get caught up trying to run the fastest speeds and give the team false hope. We wanted to emulate qualifying conditions and we were successful in doing so." Robinson believes the components are in place to make not only Daytona a success but also the rest of the season.
The key to winning at any Daytona race, regardless of series, is drafting. Drivers have to rely on teammates, friends, and sometimes even foes. Everyone wants to call themselves your friend, until the last lap when the race winner is determined. Robinson believes she will have to prove herself to rely on other driver's through thick and thin. Robinson hopes to be able look to her fellow Dodge drivers for drafting help.
Robinson recognizes the biggest obstacle in her way is to overcome the battle in the draft. Although she has experience drafting at tracks in both the NASCAR Busch Series and the ARCA Series, this will be the first time where each lap and the entire lap she will be reliant on staying nose-to-tail with the other cars around her. She is confident the meticulous car preparation by crew chief Eddie Sharp and car chief Teddy Brown will give her an advantage to have a strong showing in her racing debut at Daytona.
