Darlington pre-race testing concludes

DARLINGTON, S.C. (March 11, 1999) Pre-race testing for next weekend's Diamond Hill Plywood 200/TranSouth Financial 400 doubleheader (March 20-21) at Darlington Raceway concluded Wednesday as three NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division drivers took advantage of the track's final practice session.

NASCAR drivers Brad Loney, Jeff Finley and Jim Bown spent the day at the track 'Too Tough To Tame', preparing for the 20th running of the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 NASCAR Busch Series event and came away with positive results.

Loney was quickest with a speed of 163.920 mph, bettering the veteran Bown, whose Chevrolet wasn't far behind at 163.647 mph. Finley, driving the Dura-Lube car, was a close third at 162.834 mph.

Jeff Burton won the pole position for last year's Diamond Hill Plywood 200 with a speed of 164.562 mph. In addition to the trio who were at the track Wednesday, five other NASCAR Busch Series drivers tested over the past two weeks. Wayne Grubb was the fastest of all with a speed of 164.854 mph. Bobby Labonte will seek to capture two straight victories in the Diamond Hill race.

Bud Pole qualifying for the full 43-car field for the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 gets under way on March 19. The top 25 starting positions for the TranSouth Financial 400 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race will also be determined on Bud Pole Day.

Mark Martin made a statement in the NASCAR Winston Cup division, posting the fastest lap among five fellow NASCAR Winston Cup drivers during testing a couple of weeks ago. His blistering speed of 169.689 mph was far better than his pole-winning speed from a year ago in the TranSouth (168.665 mph).

Great Tower tickets remain for all three days of racing. For ticket information, call the Raceway at (843) 395-8499.
