RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge Charger) -- Qualified 2nd fastest

"Keeping the tires underneath us is a challenge here at Darlington, which is cool. As drivers we have the option of slowing down and staying off the wall, so maybe that's what we'll have to do. It's like driving on grass or wet grass and then hitting the pavement or driving on snow and then hitting ice type of thing. You can drive on snow, but you don't want to drive on ice. We like new tires here. Most of the passing and racing gets done on old tires here. New tires even the cars out a lot. When the tires wear off the racier the cars get when they get side by side and making moves

"I can't say this is our best chance at winning a race. I'll definitely say we've got a good shot at winning this race from a speed standpoint, from the fact we've run a lot of laps here and run good in the past and starting on the front row is a good thing.

"The whole deal with the spoiler is to make less downforce and make the drivers have to drive the car more. That's the case as far as the Cup cars being a little more sensitive and harder to drive than the Busch cars. Same tires in both and let the cream rise to the top."

"I was closer to the wall than I wanted to be, but it was OK. It was on the edge, and I didn't expect to get loose where I did. I'm pretty sure it'll be a top five run and sometimes that's all you can ask for. Kasey laid down a great lap. He was nice and smooth and we weren't quite as smooth or fast. Overall I think we've got a great racecar, but a lot of guys have got great cars here. I think the ALLTEL Dodge is capable of leading a lot of laps.

"It's going to be Darlington. Passing cars here is nice with new tires, but you struggle for grip because the tires fall off and that's great. You have to work with yourself to back off and hit your marks. Your marks change so much during a run. It's just really tough. We got loose in one and two and I knew the second lap wouldn't be any better so we just shut here down. I hope we can have a good Mother's Day weekend and have a good race here Saturday night."
