Darlington, SC. - The No. 40 Coors Light and No. 41 Target teams of Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates secured top-12 starting positions for the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 at Darlington Raceway. This is the second race in a row that the team has accomplished that feat.
Jimmy Spencer, driver of the No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T, ran a fast lap of 29.100 seconds (168.990 mph), placing the Target Dodge fifth in the lineup. Spencer was happy with his lap and how the team is performing.
"This is pretty good for this team," Spencer said. "I got through turns 3 and 4 pretty good, but I didn't get through 1 and 2 as well as I could. But I'm happy about where we are starting the race. Team Target is really starting to come together and I'm happy with the direction that we are going. Chip and the guys have been behind me and we have some good momentum going. We have the qualifying runs down now, we just need to get some top 10's and put this Target Dodge in the winner's circle."
Sterling Marlin, driver of the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T, ran a 29.154-second lap time (168.677 mph), placing him in the 11th starting position for Sunday's event. Marlin currently leads the Winston Cup point standings by 74 points over rookie Ryan Newman.
"It helps to start near the front at a track like this," Marlin said. "I was hoping for a 6th or 8th place start, but I'll take it. This is a tough track and it's going to be a long race. We did some tuning on the motor and made a few other changes. We picked up a tenth from where we practiced this morning, so we should be good for the race. This is the car that we won in Vegas with, so she's been good to us."
The Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 will be broadcast on FOX on Sunday, March 17 at 1 p.m., ET.
