Team Target finishes top-20 in Southern 500; Spencer remains in 26th place in NASCAR Winston Cup championship points.

DARLINGTON, S.C. (September 1, 2002) - The No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Jimmy Spencer finished in 18th place in the Mountain Dew Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Spencer remains in 26th place in NASCAR Winston Cup championship points; he is 13 points behind driver Ward Burton who is currently in 25th place.

Qualifying for the Mountain Dew Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway was cancelled Friday afternoon due to rain. The field was set according to owner points, therefore Spencer's Target Dodge started the race in 23rd position.

After a two-hour rain delay, the green and yellow flags waved for the start of the race under caution. The field ran approximately 20-recorded laps before taking the green flag. Spencer remained in the top-20 for the first 100 laps. He radioed in to crew chief Doug Randolph that the car was loose in the center off the corner and felt like it needed more grip.

The Target Dodge moved up from 24th to restarting in 18th position following a 14.6-second caution period pit stop by Team Target. Adjustments during a quick pit stop on lap 205 made the Target Dodge drive better and helped Spencer break into the top-10. The Target Dodge eventually finished the race in 18th position.

"We had a solid finish in the Target Dodge today," Spencer said following the race. "It was sort of an up and down day. The car was pretty loose. We made an adjustment the helped a lot, but overall our setup wasn't perfect. The Target guys were awesome in the pits today."

Jeff Gordon, driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet, won the Mountain Dew Southern 500 his second straight victory in a row. Next on the schedule for the No. 41 Target team is the Chevy Monte Carlo 400 at Richmond International Raceway on September 7, 2002.
