"I told everybody after the qualifying run that I just screwed up one and two. I didn't get in right and didn't get off right. I think we had a car that was capable of winning the pole. Congratulations to Elliott. He's been close quite a few times, running second in qualifying as well as in the race here. I didn't put it all together in the ALLTEL Dodge. That's the bottom line.
"Yes and no. I think we've got the goods as a team to do what it takes to win the pole at all these race tracks. The only exception would be Daytona. When you've got the goods to be able to get the pole, you're disappointed when you don't get it because that's why we're here. In the end we have to be satisified with a front row starting spot, especially at a place like Darlington where track position is so important. We're disappointed but at the same time we're pretty happy. Our last three qualifying efforts have been third, first and second. I think that's pretty good.
"Elliott commented on TV before that he didn't win a pole at Talladega. He won his first pole at Darlington. That's cool. This place has got so much history, it's such a great race track. You have to work to get around here, and on top of that, I guess, and this is totally my opinion, I think Rockingham and Darlington have kinda been put aside as far as development wise. I don't know if it's the market or what, but you don't see the fancy garages, you don't see fancy stands and suites. Maybe it's just a logistics thing, I don't know, but I'd love for there to be three races here. I really like the place. This is my favorite Winston Cup race track.
"It takes the total package here. You've got to have good horsepower, good tires, good shocks, good springs and everything else. I think the only person who had a better average here last year was Sterling Marlin. He was first and fourth. As a rookie to be second and fifth, we were pretty happy with that. You've got to be a good driver, you've got to attack the race track and have everything else fall into place. I attack it like it needs to be attacked.
"You attack the race track for what the race track has to offer. You attack it just as hard, but only for what it has to offer. You go to Bristol, and you attack it for just as hard as what Bristol has to offer. It may have a certain amount of grip. It may have a certain amount of forgiveness, but if this track will only take 95 percent of what you can give it, then you only give it 95 percent. Sometimes that's hard to adjust to, especially on older tires."
