PHOENIX, Ariz. (Oct. 30, 1997) Quotes from selected drivers after Busch Pole Qualifying for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series GM Goodwrench/Delco Battery 300 at Phoenix International Raceway:
MIKE BLISS No. 2 Team ASE Ford
"This was definitely the best lap we did all day. The Robert Yates motor really came alive. We tuned it up for qualifying and with the chassis setup, we had the whole package right. And it takes a whole package to get around here quickly. We've got qualifying done, so now we'll go work on the race setup. I've been running here since 1983 and I really like this place. But there's tricks to it and I complain about it every year. My problem is that I can't get through Turns 1 and 2 like I can (Turns) 3 and 4. In (Turns) 1 and 2, I'm always tight and when I try to get those better, I've got the wrong line for (Turns) 3 and 4 and I'm always loose through there. It's just hard to get around here smoothly. "I've recently had talks with Richard Petty about a Cup ride for next year but I reached a point where I needed to let my truck owner, Jimmy Smith, know my plans for next year. The Winston Cup deal wasn't being offered immediately so I committed to another year with the trucks. I'm ready to do another year in the trucks. I'm not quite ready to make the move. Results are what get you to Winston Cup and I' willing to do another year here. This is a good series. I'm flattered I was considered by Richard Petty. Kyle Petty and I talked a lot. He's a fun guy and good to work with but it wasn't the right move yet."
BRYAN REFFNER No. 66 Carlin Burners & Controls Ford
"We need a good finish here this weekend. We've been running decent all day and I have my fingers crossed for tomorrow (actually Saturday). The truck was very strong in (Turns) 3 and 4. I sort of hesitated in Turns 1 and 2. Last spring, I blew the whole lap there and I wanted to make sure I didn't do that again. This is my fourth time here in the trucks. My best finish has been fourth place. The team has had a lot of DNFs this season, so our No. 1 goal is to finish this race. This is our first year together and a good finish here would be good momentum to carry us into next year."
RON HORNADAY No. 16 NAPA Brakes Chevrolet
"The driver got excited again and I drove it up the bank. We've come a long way with this NAPA Chevrolet and the whole team has been working really hard at. If we get our qualifying down pat we'll be OK 'cause we race real good. If we can keep it together this weekend we'll be looking good."
STEVE PARK No. 76 NAPA Brakes Chevrolet
"My first time on the track here was this morning. This was definitely a good lap for us. Since I haven't raced here before, the plan was to get some laps in preparation for the Cup race."
STACY COMPTON No. 86 Valvoline Instant Oil Change Ford
"I'm not sure where that time came from but we'll take it. We had a few problems this morning. I thought I wrecked it going into (Turn) 1 but it stuck. We'll wait and see if this time holds up. I was surprised, I'll be honest. Troy and the guys made some changes right before qualifying. We wrecked that lap. We just didn't hit anything. We had a good run. We went down in the corner and the truck turned. We'd been fighting it day. Hat's off to these guys. All I'm doing is riding around."
JACK SPRAGUE No. 24 Quaker State/GMAC Chevrolet
"The truck went away between practice and qualifying. It was fine this morning but I was all over the track in qualifying. The lap was so bad I thought I had the pole because I worked so hard to get that lap in. Some laps just feel that way."
RICH BICKLE No. 17 DieHard Chevrolet
"This is the second time we've come here and those Southwest Tour guys have put that bias-ply rubber down.-.the track's really slick. It takes 15 or 20 laps to come around. It's too bad 'cause we've got a helluva truck here. We had a pretty good lap."
CHUCK BOWN No. 99 Exide Batteries Ford
"It was the best lap of the day. I was very disappointed with my first set of tires but the second set was good. In Turn 1, I went in as deep as I wanted to. It is easy to get too high in that corner. I also went into Turn 4 real well but got on the throttle a bit too early. But it was a good lap. My starting position is better now than it was at the spring race. I think I started 31st there."
RICK CARELLI No. 6 RE/MAX International Chevrolet
"Well, we left too much out on the track. It could've been better in Turns 1 and 2 and it could've been better in Turns 3 and 4. The Southwest Tour car is set up pretty well and if I get the truck set up as well, I'll be in pretty good shape."
