DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Aug. 20, 2001) -- Ricky Craven left Michigan Speedway after Sunday's Pepsi 400 with plenty of things to be happy about. He collected a career best second-place finish and the Bud Pole award, which qualifies the driver of the No. 32 Tide Ford for PPI Motorsports for next year's Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway.
"Being in the Budweiser Shootout is a racer's dream," said Craven, who now becomes the 18th driver qualified to date for the non-points event.
"It's really a small number of laps of just pure aggression. Everyone's out there going for the trophy from Lap 1. It's a race you don't want to watch. It's a race you want to be in."
It'll be the third time Craven has participated in the Budweiser Shootout, which will go green on Sunday, Feb. 10 and will kick off the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season. The Newburgh, Maine native competed in the Budweiser Shootout in 1997 and 1999 finishing eight and 12th respectively. In the 2000 Budweiser Shootout qualifier, he started from the pole and finished seventh.
