INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway president J. Douglas Boles has confirmed that Sesame Street's very own Cookie Monster will be the grand marshal of this weekend's Brickyard 400 at IMS.
This follows the success of the campaign, Road Trip Across America, which sees the character sharing a message of inclusivity, one that's not only reflected through the show, but also a video alongside 23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace.
“Bring the whole family out for a cookie break as we welcome ‘Sesame Street’s’ Cookie Monster to IMS for the Brickyard 400 presented by PPG on July 27,” Boles said in a press release.
“Following Cookie Monster’s command as grand marshal, everyone can enjoy exciting on-track action as the stars of NASCAR take on the iconic 2.5-mile oval. And remember, children under 15 are admitted free with the purchase of an adult Flex or General Admission ticket.”
The role of grand marshal will see Cookie Monster giving the “drivers, start your engines” command to the amusement of many, but it's all for a great cause.
Commenting on the campaign, Aaron Bisman, Senior Vice President, Head of Marketing at the non-profit Sesame Workshop, said the following.
“For over 55 years, Sesame Street has been reaching and teaching children across America. What better way to extend the laughter and learning than by bringing Sesame Street to where our young fans are — their hometowns?
"This summer, families will experience the joy of Sesame Street at state fairs, baseball games, and so much more.”
While the race this weekend kicks off the tour, the show will also visit a number of other sports activities, including the Milwaukee Brewers on 25 July, which will host a Sesame Street-themed day with activations during the seventh inning and around the stadium.
Elmo waved the green flag at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1993, and The Great Gonzo was grand marshal for the Auto Club 400 in 2014. It seems as though NASCAR can't get enough of The Muppets.
The NASCAR Cup Series Brickyard 400 presented by PPG will start at 2:00pm Eastern Time on Sunday.
